The same is true for intelligent design: it isn't science, and there is no philosophically intermediate position between science and religion.
Moreover, when students started asking questions about intelligent design, the administrators left the classroom, suggesting that questions on the matter should be asked at home.
It was an interesting experience in the sense that I thought Wells conceded so many points that one would conclude that there is no real reason to debate the issue at all.

David Hepworth, publisher of Word magazine and hero to all of us who cherish an intelligent view of the world of popular music, has written a characteristically witty and trenchant column in today’s MediaGuardian, arguing that design is too important to be left to designers.
4 Designers are apt to wriggle out of practical problems.
But the point of this post is to emphasise how petty design details such as this are really, really important to some users.

FAQ: Is ID just a negative argument against evolution?
If this appears as a "negative argument against evolution" it is only because this unique test case of irreducible complexity is a strong prediction of intelligent design (due to the high complex-specified information content of irreducible complexity) and just happens to be anti-predicted by a competing hypothesis, Darwinian evolution.
Design proponents do not argue against evolution merely because that is what proves design, but because in these special cases, the falsification of evolution also entails a matched positive prediction of intelligent design theory, because intelligent design predicts the exact opposite of evolution.
Intelligent design is not merely a negative argument against evolution, but is inferred because of its positive predictions of how we understand designers to operate.

 Life's Grand Design
Intelligent design proposes much the same mechanism, except that the production of extra copies and their modification to suit the embryo were a matter of intentional design, not chance and natural selection.
The concept of intelligent design is particularly clear on one point: organisms have been designed to meet the distinct needs of their lifestyles and environments, not to reflect an evolutionary history.
There is no reason, from the standpoint of intelligent design, for the human embryo to produce an empty yolk sac.

Intelligent design "could just as easily lead to New Age or Hindu-like notions of creation, as well as weird alien sci-fi notions," Carl Wieland says in an article for a group called Answers in Genesis.

Intelligent Design is therefore not the study of intelligent causes per se, but of informational pathways induced by intelligent causes.
For Intelligent Design the first question is not how organisms came to be (though this is a research question that needs to be addressed), but whether they demonstrate clear, empirically detectable marks of being intelligently caused.
Logically speaking, Intelligent Design is compatible with everything from the starkest creationism (i.e., God intervening at every point to create new species) to the most subtle and far-ranging evolution (i.e., God seamlessly melding all organisms together in a great tree of life).

Intelligent design - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Many intelligent design followers believe that "Scientism" is itself a religion that promotes secularism and materialism in an attempt to erase theism from public life, and view their work in the promotion of intelligent design as a way to return religion to a central role in education and other public spheres.
Critics of both intelligent design and the weak form of anthropic principle argue that they are essentially a tautology; in their view, these arguments amount to the claim that life is able to exist because the universe is able to support life.
Intelligent design, by appealing to a supernatural agent, directly conflicts with the principles of science, which limit its inquiries to empirical, observable and ultimately testable data, and which require explanations to be based upon empirical evidence.

Although "intelligent design" advocates often claim that they are only arguing for the existence of a "designer", who may or may not be God, all the leading advocates do believe that the designer is God, and frequently accompany their allegedly scientific arguments with discussion of religious issues, especially when addressing religious audiences.
Intelligent Design advocates frequently make vague appeals to "information" in support of their arguments, claiming that the information in living organisms cannot be generated except by intelligent design.
A major distinguishing feature of "intelligent design" is the attempt to shift the focus of the debate away from the details of Earth history and towards more abstract concepts such as "design" or "teleology", terms which are rarely used in a non-question-begging manner.

Intelligent design theory is simply an effort to empirically detect whether the "apparent design" in nature acknowledged by virtually all biologists is genuine design (the product of an intelligent cause) or is simply the product of an undirected process such as natural selection acting on random variations.
Intelligent design theory is supported by doctoral scientists, researchers and theorists at a number of universities, colleges, and research institutes around the world.
The theory of intelligent design holds that certain features of the universe and of living things are best explained by an intelligent cause, not an undirected process such as natural selection.

Intelligent design movement - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Intelligent design is an attempt to recast religious dogma in an effort to reintroduce the teaching of biblical creationism to public school science classrooms; the intelligent design movement is an effort to reshape American society into a theocracy, primarily through education.
The intelligent design movement primarily campaigns on two fronts: a public relations campaign meant to influence the popular media and sway public opinion; and an aggressive lobbying campaign to cultivate support for the teaching of intelligent design amongst policymakers and the wider educational community.
Principal intelligent design proponents have stated a unified goal of greatly undermining or eliminating altogether the teaching of evolution in public school science and to also secure recognition of creationists claims of scientific legitimacy by opening the door to supernatural explanations.

The Science Behind Intelligent Design Theory
Intelligent design theory makes inferences based upon observations about the types of complexity that can be produced by the action of intelligent agents vs. the types of information that can be produced through purely natural processes to infer that life was designed by an intelligence.
Intelligent design theory is based solely upon applying observations about intelligent action and principles of information theory to the construction of biological systems, and nothing more.
Critics of intelligent design have argued that although we may observe through experience that various structures are always made by intelligence, we can still argue that they were constructed by natural processes.

Intelligent design says that some features of the universe and living things can not be accounted for by natural causes, but instead show signs of being designed by an intelligent agent.

Since intelligent design requires a designer working outside of natural processes, it is by definition not science.

Boundless: The Meaning of Intelligent Design
Intelligent design is rooted in the observation — which is probably as old as humankind — that the world looks very much as if it were the result of an intelligent cause.
As the intelligent design movement has grown, so has the number of books, articles, videos, etc. In fact, it’s gotten to the point that keeping up with all the resources is like trying to drink from a fire hose.
Proponents of intelligent design, however, counter that this claim is based on a selective reading of the evidence.

Casey Luskin dot com. intelligent design & IDEA
Intelligent design implies that life is here as a result of the purposeful action of an intelligent designer, standing in contrast to Darwinian evolution, which postulates that life exists due to the chance, purposeless, blind forces of nature.
The theory of intelligent design holds that certain features of the universe and living things are best explained by an intelligent cause, and are not the result of an undirected, chance-based process such as Darwinian evolution.
Intelligent design begins with observations about the types of information produced by intelligent agents.

Intelligent Design accepts much of evolutionary theory, but differs in one crucial aspect -- it insists that there is empirical evidence that an intelligent designer or designer has been at work in the history of life.
Proponents of Intelligent Design point to complex biological structures such as the eye, birds' wings, the existence of mitochondria, etc., arguing that such structures could not possibly have developed due purely to random mutations, even with the aid of natural selection.
Intelligent design merely concerns itself with features of natural objects that reliably signal the action of an intelligence, whatever that intelligence might be.
