Instinct - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Instinct is the inherent disposition of a living organism toward a particular behavior.
Instinct provides a response to external stimuli, which moves an organism to action, unless overriden by intelligence, which is creative and hence far more versatile.
Evolution however encourages multiple instincts, exampled by the recent case of birds in England flying east for the winter, the result being that because of global warming these birds are now surviving at very high rates, further encouraging this behavior.

 LANGUAGE INSTINCT?
Instinct: Pinker comments that to use the term 'instinct' in relation to language is 'quaint'(18) but it is worse than quaint.
If language is like other instincts, presumably it evolved by natural selection, the only successful scientific explanation of complex biological traits (354), the only alternative (Pinker's emphasis) that can explain the evolution of a complex organ like the eye or like language.
To call any aspect of human behaviour instinct can mean no more than that it has a biological basis, a genetic basis.

 instinct on Encyclopedia.com
INSTINCT [instinct] term used generally to indicate an innate tendency to action, or pattern of behavior, elicited by specific stimuli and fulfilling vital needs of an organism.
Examples of almost purely instinctive behavior are found in the behavior of many lower animals, in which activity (often quite complex) is performed that is not based upon past experience, e.g., reproductive and food-gathering activity in insects.
Sociobiologists and ethologists such as Konrad Lorenz have sought to understand social behaviors in terms of instincts, among humans as well as other animals.

Migration is the instinct that seems to have puzzled students of behavior most.
Kingston points out that instinct is independent of instruction, is not associated with reasoning, and has an end in view of which the animal itself is ignorant.
Tinbergen defines instinct as innate behavior and restricts his discussion of it to its causes and varieties.

Literature.org - The Online Literature Library
Changes of instinct may sometimes be facilitated by the same species having different instincts at different periods of life, or at different seasons of the year, or when placed under different circumstances, andc.; in which case either one or the other instinct might be preserved by natural selection.
Domestic instincts, as they may be called, are certify far less fixed or invariable than natural instincts; but they have been acted on by far less rigorous selection, and have been transmitted for an incomparably shorter period, under less fixed conditions of life.
As some degree of variation in instincts under a state of nature, and the inheritance of such variations, are indispensable for the action of natural selection, as many instances as possible ought to have been here given; but want of space prevents me.

Classics in the History of Psychology -- James (1890) Chapter 24
But the instinct itself is transient, in the sense that if, for any reason, the child be fed by spoon during the first few days of its life and not put to the breast, it may be no easy matter after that to make it suck at all.
The facts are just the reverse: the sexual instinct is particularly liable to be checked and modified by slight differences in the individual stimulus, by the inward condition of the agent himself, by habits once acquired, and by the antagonism of contrary impulses operating on the mind.
Thus, then, without troubling ourselves about the words instinct and reason, we may confidently say that however uncertain man's reactions upon his environment may some-times seem in comparison with those of lower creatures, the uncertainty is probably not due to their possession of any principles of action which he lacks.

 The Genetics of Behavior
Instinct: Instinct is an old word, referring to inborn behaviors.
The genetics of behavior is a very difficult subject to study; most work has been done on rats and mice running mazes, and most of it isn't very helpful to a dog breeder.
In Tinbergen's world of instinct there is no learning, only the inborn patterns.

Perhaps the most important thing you can do for your dog is NOT to expect any specific behaviours, but rather to mentally free your dog to follow his instincts.
Although some obedience training is useful to control an enthusiastic dog, an extensively trained Beardie may need more time to free up his mind to allow his instincts to kick in.
If your dog doesn't want to work on the day of a test, he might well do beautifully under other conditions or when he is more mature.

This "humans bad, animals good" mantra is one of Instinct's shakier concepts.
There's also a great deal of talk about society turning people into "Takers" and a whole rant about how, if we all just returned to our roots as primitive hunter-gatherers, life would be a dream.

The story draws us in, and, especially for those who are sensitive to environmental issues, the primary theme of man's destructive need to control his world has resonance.

The semi-mystical notion that we might be able to slip the tyrannical bonds of civilization and rediscover some renewed harmony with nature is an integral part of modern life, and its allure remains so strong that even a simplistic narrative like "Instinct" can gain tremendous power from it.
More fundamentally, it's a buddy film akin to "The Shawshank Redemption," a male-male romance in which two seemingly opposed personalities form an emotional bond, each learning lessons from the other about the nature of freedom.

While it all may sound rather serious, the draw of Basic Instinct is its over-the-top style, the way the story forges ahead with gleeful abandon.

Rather, it adds to it — Basic Instinct is widely regarded as an expertly crafted guilty pleasure.

The thing about Instinct is that, as well as being a fascinating character study, it has also a lot to say about life and the way people are losing touch with the world around them.
The only thing wrong with Instinct as an album is the fact that it is woefully short, and misses out at least half a dozen sensational cues, including some powerful action material and several knockout "tense" themes which underscore the electrified meetings between Hopkins and Gooding.
The thing that Instinct has in abundance, and what makes it stand head and shoulders above Elfman's other recent scores, is pure, old-fashioned beauty.

Instinct Movie Review by Anthony Leong
"Instinct" has very few surprises, and for the most part of its two hour running time, it is very clear in what direction the story is heading and what the final outcome will be.
Despite an otherwise prosaic story, "Instinct" still manages to elicit interest through the powerhouse performances delivered by its two leads.
The other supporting characters are culled from the tired clichés of prison genre films past, and despite the attempts to integrate them into the Powell-Caulder relationship, they end up becoming obligatory characters that play a more functional role in advancing the plot.

You can see the intelligent story struggling to get out, but its been restrained and sedated by the rigidity of the prefabricated script, which ironically disparages structure and control.
Most of the film takes place in prison therapy sessions, during which Gooding tries to draw out the man buried under Hopkins' animal instincts.
Naturally, Gooding is pretty proud of himself at this point and thinks he's in control, but once his patient starts speaking, their relationship becomes a psychological battle, and -- as we know from "Silence of the Lambs" -- when you're playing mind games with an Anthony Hopkins character, you're gonna lose.
