Topic: Independent Living

 Independent Living: Just the facts...
The Independent Living approach, in traditional self-help group fashion, is based on peer support and role modeling in local grass-roots initiatives, referred to as Centers for Independent Living or CILs, that are run and controlled by persons with disabilities.
For example, peer support is used in Independent Living Skills classes where people living with their families or in institutions learn how to run their everyday lives in preparation for living by themselves.
With origins in the US civil rights and consumer movement of the late 1960’s the Independent Living movement replaces the special education and rehabilitation experts’ concepts of integration, normalization and rehabilitation with a new paradigm developed by disabled people themselves.

Ratzka, Adolf. 2003. "Independent Living in Sweden."
For a better understanding of the Independent Living philosophy’s introduction, development, role and its particular interpretation in Sweden an account of the situation of persons with extensive disabilities in Sweden in the 1980s, before the introduction of the Independent Living philosophy and approach, will be helpful.
In the 1980s, the few leaders who did live in cluster housing or had home help service seemed to make a point of publicly displaying grief and resignation over their situation, perhaps, in order to show solidarity (35) with other unhappy residents.
So far, the movement’s lasting contribution to disability policy have been the articulation of the concept of consumer power, the notion that persons with disabilities are not objects of professional intervention but experts on their needs, and the recognition of control over one’s every-day life as a basic human right.

 History of Independent Living
Thus, another cornerstone of independent living philosophy became the shift away from the au thoritarian medical model to a paradigm of individual empowerment and responsibility for defining and meeting one's own needs.
Ralph Nader was the most outspoken advocate for this movement, and his staff and followers came to be known as "Nader's Raider s." Perhaps most fundamental to independent living philosophy today is the idea of control by consumers of goods and services over the choices and options available to them.
Self-help and peer support are recognized as key points in independent living philosophy.
