Another very effective immunosuppressant for treating PV is cyclophosphamide (Cytoxan®).
This decrease in the body's own immune system activity makes immunosuppressants useful in the treatment of autoimmune diseases like pemphigus and pemphigoid.
They decrease the body's natural defense to foreign bodies, thereby preventing rejection of the transplanted organ by the body.

Because of this, recipients taking any of the immunosuppressants are at an increased risk of developing skin cancer.
Immunosuppressants can cause hair loss by weakening hair strands, which increases the hair's tendency to break off at the roots.
The surgery involved with transplantation, the invasive tests or procedures that follow, as well as immunosuppressants, place recipients at a high risk for infection.

The most frequent side effects of immunosuppressants are stomach and intestinal distress, skin rash, and mouth sores.
A 2002 study suggested it may be more effective than cyclophosphamide pulse therapy.
An intravenous administration of methylprednisolone using "pulse" therapy for three days is proving useful for flare-ups in the joints.

It seems from the data that immunosuppressants are used to late in the course of the disease to change the natural history.
Although this study has its shortcomings it does question whether the use of immunosuppressants are changing the natural course of the disease.
The impact of current therapies, in particular immunosuppressants, on the natural history of Crohn's disease remains unclear.

 Immunosuppressants
Many medicines can interact with immunosuppressants so it is very important that you let your doctor know what medicines you are already taking or using, including prescription medicines, those bought without a prescription and herbal medicines, before you start treatment with an immunosuppressant.
There are various immunosuppressant medicines that may be used if your eczema is so severe that more conventional medicines cannot control it.
This depends on the particular immunosuppressant prescribed, but a full list of possible side effects will feature in the patient information leaflet provided with the medicine.

This course of therapy, while necessary, may also increase the risk of infection and illness since the body’s natural defenses are lowered to prevent an immune response.
Current therapy for transplant rejection involves utilizing a regimen of immunosuppressants, including cyclosporin A, tacrolimus, and rapamycin (sirolimus).
Additionally, chronic use of immunosuppressants can lead to impairment of the graft recipients’ immune system.

Herbal Therapy Interactions with Immunosuppressive Agents
The immunosuppressive medications used to prevent allograft rejection after transplantation present a host of patient monitoring challenges for the pharmacist.
Patients taking immunosuppressants should be counseled to avoid these immunostimulating herbs to prevent competing effects on the immune system.
Pharmacists must be ready to monitor and counsel transplant patients or other patients who are taking immunosuppressants concurrently with herbal products.

 Transplant Rejection Treatment
These side effects make immunosuppression difficult for the patient, and significantly affect quality of life, as immunosuppressant therapy is often life-long.
This results in noticeable better results, as can be seen from the progression from 70%/30% human:murine drug Muromonab-CD3 to the experimental 90%/10% human:murine drugs Basiliximab and Daclizumab (both currently in clinical trials).
Current research with monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies seek to meet these aims, but new immunosuppressive approaches give rise to unexpected complications.

Combinations of both immunosuppressants and corticosteroids can be very effective but also increase the risk of side effects; regular follow-up and monitoring by your health professional is essential.

 Diabetes Self-Management - Immunosuppressants
The first drugs used for immunosuppressant therapy, azathioprine (brand name Imuran) and corticosteroids (such as Prednisone), were introduced in the 1960’s.
Because immunosuppressants suppress the immune system, they make a person more susceptible to infections and certain types of cancers such as lymphomas.
Therefore, the immune response needs to be suppressed to allow the body to accept a transplanted organ.

 Immunosuppressants
As immunosuppressants have been proven to be beneficial in other autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis, drugs that have an immunosuppressant function have been proposed to be potentially beneficial in controlling disease progression in patients with MS.
The drugs listed in the table below have immunosuppressant effects and are sometimes used to treat patients with MS.
Please note that Tysabri (Natalizumab) another immunosuppressive drug was previously available for a short period of time, for use in treating MS in the US.

Non-specific immunosuppressants in the treatment of multiple sclerosis
Clinical experience during the past decades has amply demonstrated that some patients with MS respond to immunosuppressants.
Recent therapeutic trials of potent immunosuppressive agents such as Campath-1H, mitoxantrone and cyclophosphamide of MS patients with high relapse rates, rapid accumulation of disability and high degree of MRI activity, have resulted in strong suppression of clinical and MRI inflammatory activity, provided that profound and prolonged lymphopenia was achieved.

Liver Facts - Cyclosporine Linked to Return of Liver Tumors
THURSDAY, April 28 (HealthDay News) -- High levels of the immunosuppressant drug cyclosporine may lead to the return of tumors in liver cancer patients who've had a liver transplant, says a new Italian study.
The researchers suggested that immunosuppressive schedules should be tailored to individual patients based on the biology of their tumors, with the knowledge that people at high risk would likely benefit from cyclosporine levels that are kept as low as possible.
"We provide here further evidence on the key role of immunosuppression in tumor recurrence after liver transplantation; in particular, we recommend that in those patients transplanted for hepatocellular carcinoma who receive CsA-based (cyclosporine) immunosuppression, the exposure to the drug should not exceed the daily blood levels that we identified," the researchers wrote.
