 Mental Illness
Despite the fact that the various theories of the etiology and nature of these disorders are very suggestive of ways to understand the responsibility of those with the disorders for their symptomatic behavior, these and other mental disorders have received surprisingly little discussion from philosophers vis-à-vis responsibility for action.
For example, Boorse's evolutionary approach uses illness to mean an internal condition that interferes with a natural function that promotes the continuation of the species, but in deciding between this and an alternative approach, we have to ask whether this model of illness is the best one for us.
The philosophical investigation of the nature of mental illness is therefore relevant to many other areas of philosophy.

Mental illness - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The most basic treatment involves identifying maladaptive, self-destructive, or inappropriate behaviors and finding ways, with the patient, of coping with, eliminating, or altering those behaviors to promote overall mental health.
Some of these organizations would prefer that psychiatric disorders be viewed as natural (although not always functional or acceptable) variations in the neurology of individuals, and promote the acceptance of a neurologically diverse human population.
Cognitive behavior therapy focuses on changing patterns of thinking through learning, which may ultimately restore so-termed "healthy" brain chemistry.

There is struggle: 'My husband has an illness that makes his behavior terrible to live with, but I feel that to leave him would be to abandon the love of my life'.
When grief is looked upon as a valid and, in its own right, interesting topic of study, it becomes possible to treat it in a way that neither trivializes it nor puffs it up; to treat it, in effect, as another part of the 'life-space' which must be examined, understood, and assimilated...
From the onset it is essential to appreciate grieving as the healthy, normal, adaptive process it is. As you proceed through this book, you will see that grieving becomes effective when we give ourselves permission to become conscious of what is happening to us, and to both tune into and work with that process.
