Topic: IV drug

AIDS health education for intravenous drug users.
IV drug users have an addiction and a subculture that make risk reduction difficult; for example, to refuse to share needles can endanger personal relationships, and carrying clean works (rather than renting them in a shooting gallery) risks arrest.
The main functions of health education in areas where IV drug users have this level of knowledge are to disseminate news of new discoveries; reach those drug users who have not yet learned AIDS basics; reinforce what is already known; and provide information about new programs to help drug users deal with AIDS-related problems.
In New York City, at least, knowledge about AIDS transmission is widespread among IV drug users, and most drug injectors report having changed their drug use practices to reduce their risks.

With this system, a syringe is prepared containing a drug which is placed in a device with a spring that exerts constant positive pressure on the plunger of the syringes.
An alternative method for preparing drugs for intravenous administration was use of manaufacturers' containers that were configured for reconstitution, attaching to piggyback IV tubing and hanging from an IV pole to be administered as a piggyback infusion.

Jocelyn Elders Speaks Out on Harm Reduction & Clean Needles: an answer to stemming the tide of HIV and HCV
As well, the demographics of HIV is such that a leading cause for spread of HIV is IV drug use with dirty needles, sharing needles or drug paraphernalia where one person is infected with HIV or HCV.
There are many reasons why drug users do not stop using drugs, and whether or not clean needles are provided most users will continue using IV drugs.
The CDC reports: Sharing syringes and other equipment for drug injection is a well known route of HIV transmission, yet injection drug use contributes to the epidemic' s spread far beyond the circle of those who inject.

Instead, law enforcement efforts focus on capturing illegal dealers of "hard drugs" such as heroin and cocaine, passing out clean needles to IV drug users, and providing medical assistance for addicted users who wish to stop taking drugs.
Despite the application of billions of dollars of taxpayer money to this perceived problem, recreational drug use remains common in the United States, and according to some studies is actually more common than in Europe where the laws are more relaxed.
Many societies have abandoned what they feel are unsuccessful attempts to prohibit recreational drugs, and instead turned to a policy of harm reduction by informing users of ways to reduce common risks associated with popular drugs, and providing medical assistance for drug users who wish to stop using drugs.

Critics relate issues such as AIDS, IV drug use, street-level dealers, and gang-warfare to drug prohibition, not drug use.
By 1920, the drug user became known as a drug fiend, an immoral outcast who spread his addictive disease to everyone he touched.
The Drug War has attempted to diminish the flow of drugs into the country, the manufacture of drugs within American borders and the desire to use drugs with supply and demand tactics.

“US Funding Will Help Sustain Vancouver Intravenous Drug Users Study”
“There are serious health complications associated with crystal meth use and this study will help us gain a better understanding of the problem and the ways we can address it.” Vancouver provides a “unique setting” for studying IV drug users, said Kerr.
Since 1996, VIDUS has tracked drug users in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, an area with one of the densest populations of IV drug users in North America.
Co-principal investigator Thomas Kerr said adding the youth component to the study will help researchers understand what leads to IV drug use, the rate at which youth begin injecting, and what might prevent them from starting to inject.

Carisoprodol is an effective muscle-relaxant: Arizona Legislature Passes Bill Classifying Soma as a Schedule IV Drug
During its most recent session, the Arizona Legislature passed a bill classifying the muscle relaxer Carisoprodol, known more commonly by the brand name Soma, as a Schedule IV drug, making Arizona one of a handful of states to classify the drug as a controlled substance.
Federal law states that Schedule IV drugs are those "which have low potential for abuse but may lead to physical or psychological dependence." States can classify certain drugs as controlled substances, while the drugs remain uncontrolled federally.
Carisoprodol is metabolized to meprobamate, an anti-anxiety drug already classified federally under the Controlled Substances Act as a Schedule IV drug.

NICE says the choice of drug should also be influenced by current practice, which accepts that people who have already received streptokinase once should not be treated with it again.
It says that, where pre-hospital delivery of thrombolytic drugs is considered to be beneficial, for example, because of the inaccessibility of acute hospital facilities, reteplase (Rapilysin) or tenecteplase (Metalyse) should be the preferred options because they can be given by rapid intravenous (IV) bolus infusion.
They should now be able to receive the right treatment at the right time, which could mean the difference between life and death."
