With that said, Hopes and Fears is the kind of disc that starts off wonderfully and loses energy some time toward the middle.
I’m still unsold on whether they have any staying power, but for now Hopes and Fears is enough to whet my appetite and cross my fingers for a stellar sophomore effort.
Hopes and Fears is a fine enough album.

But Hopes and Fears is still a remarkable and surprisingly mature debut album from a young band with a bright future.
Keane's debut album "Hopes And Fears" was released in May 2004 and went straight in at No.1 in the UK, and has since gone almost triple-platinum.
At its best, Hopes and Fears is reminiscent of Bends-era Radiohead, and singer Tom Chaplin's voice is closer to Thom Yorke's falsetto than Chris Martin's cracked whine.

Hopes and Fears is 11 pop nuggets, simple and direct.
Hopes and Fears contains more hooks than most pop groups manage in their careers; the album brims with unabashedly grand, sun-breaking-through-the-clouds gestures.

Keane: Hopes and Fears - PopMatters Music Review
Hopes and Fears is one of those albums that I want to like.
If they lose the pseudo-urban b/w photography, the dodgy metaphors centred around "fading" and "dissolving", the references to being blinded by the light, and such arty effects as the backward playing vocals in 'Bedshaped', then Keane could only move on from my fears to their hopes.

 EARLASH : Album Reviews
On their latest release, Hopes and Fears, Keane's songs are simple, relaxed, and range from semi-ballads (songs not quite slow enough to be true ballads) to mid-tempo, melodic anthems.
The album title says it all, that everyone's life is full of hopes and fears.
For those who appreciate dreamy pop that's not formulaic adult contemporary, Hopes and Fears is a fantastic pick.

Keane: Hopes and Fears Aversion.com Review
It?s easy to listen to Hopes and Fears, both immediately because of its inviting sound, and long-term because, under the ear candy, Keane?s lyrics, vocals and song structure, are built to last.
Keane rides the shockwave out of Britain with its debut, Hopes and Fears, a quiet, tender pop album that escapes the mind-melting sounds of over-indulgent studio work for a serving of crisp piano pop.
A piano sits at the heart of all the songs on Hopes and Fears, but Keane isn?t a piano band.

 Adrian's Album Reviews : Keane
What's important for now is the fact that 'Hopes And Fears' is a debut album that shall be remembered.
'Hopes And Fears' isn't an album that will change your life.
It's also a song, that despite my comments (and fears) earlier, that Keane may remain stuck in a rut stylistically - that perhaps they do indeed have the potential to move in different directions in the future.

 Art Bears [www.progweed.net]
The result was the dissolution of Henry Cow, with the longer pieces being released as Henry Cow's Western Culture and the shorter vocal tracks being released as the first Art Bears album, Hopes and Fears.
Since it was recorded during the same sessions as the last Cow album, Hopes and Fears features several members of Henry Cow as guests, and sounds somewhat more Cow-like than the other albums.
I've heard this referred to as "the lost Henry Cow album." There is some truth to that, I guess -- after all, it was recorded during the same sessions as Western Culture, and the Cow members who didn't go on to form the Art Bears are all listed as guest musicians.

 Aquinas: Nature and Grace (ix.ii.iii.i)
I answer: just as hope has a twofold object, namely the future good which one hopes to obtain, and the help of another through which one hopes to obtain it, so also can fear have a twofold object, namely the evil which a man fears, and the source from which it can come to him.
The evil of punishment, on the other hand, is an evil only in so far as it deprives one of some particular good.
God cannot be the evil which a man fears, since he is goodness itself.

 Skeptic's Dictionary Newsletter
Suburban myths don't reveal anything interesting about our cultural fears, hopes, desires, etc. They are simply falsehoods or misunderstandings that have found their way into textbooks, journalist's stories, public opinion, etc. They have nothing in common with storytelling and rather than being attributed to a FOAF, they're often attributed to unnamed studies and authoritative sources.
They provide an insight into cultural fears, hopes, desires, etc. One of the common elements of ULs is the storyteller's insistence on the truth of the story that came from a "friend of a friend" (FOAF).
He noted that many urban legends involve stories of threats to somebody in one culture helping out someone in another culture and then being given help in return, e.g., the alleged woman who helped a Muslim and then was warned to stay away from the shopping mall on Halloween.

Digital Spy: 'Scissor Sisters' best-selling album
Hopes And Fears smugly sat at the top of the album chart during November and December and was thought to be the greatest commercial success of the year, but then Scissor Sisters beat it by just 582 at the last minute.
Although it was thought that Keane's debut album Hopes And Fears was the highest-selling of the year, Scissor Sisters beat them on New Year's Eve.
"It's a fantastic result, but what is most special is that the two biggest-selling albums of the year are both from brand new UK-signed artists," said Lucian Grainge, the chairman Scissor Sisters' record label, Universal Music UK.

Overall, I'd have to say that this is my least favorite Art Bears album, without the compelling eclecticism of Hopes and Fears or the sarcastic solidity of The World As It Is Today.
The World As It Is Today, the Bears' final album, is a bitter, sarcastic critique of capitalism, complete with heavy-handed Marxist lyrics from Cutler and a blocky, strident sound.

Gold & Silver Forum - False Hopes, False Fears, and Real Concerns
The current economic conditions in the U.S. compared to the conditions of the period from 1995–2000 have generated, according to Edmund Phelps ("False Hopes for the Economy and False Fears," Wall Street Journal, June 3, 2003), two false hopes for the economy and two false fears.
Phelps asks, "But what recession?" A look at real GDP relative to the trend can be interpreted as a temporary bubble where Real GDP and growth rates were temporarily higher than the trend, but "we are more or less back to normalcy.
But whereas Phelps would "look forward to normal times, with their ups and downs," with a greater understanding of ABCT and its greater acceptance by businessmen and policy makers, we could look forward to greater prosperity without the ups and downs associated with boom and bust.

 PIXELSURGEON Reviews Music Keane
Hopes and Fears is definitely worth spending some ‘quality time’ with, but occasionally you might feel like you’re listening to a band with a lot of potential, and not the definitive artefact in itself.
The melodies that Keane have pulled out of the bag for Hopes and Fears are of that wondrous kind that you feel you must have heard before, but are exhilarating precisely because you haven’t.
Fans will be familiar with many of the tracks, (several have already been released as singles and b-sides from their days with Fierce Panda), and newcomers to the band after their recent singles chart impact won’t have to look hard on the web before they’ve heard at least half the album.

Keane - Hopes and Fears (Island)
With Hopes and Fears it is immediately clear that Chris Martin and co have a worthy rival for the public's affections on their hands (Martin himself clearly saw the potential, he tried to hire the band's keyboardist and songwriter Tim Rice-Oxley in Coldplay's early days).
With Hopes and Fears, which has carefully been nutured by producer Mark 'Spike' Stent, Keane have the best debut LP since Coldplay's Parachutes on their hands.
Although their lack of electric and bass guitars has been seen by some members of the music press as a potential weakness for the band, Keane knew this was never going to be a pitfall.

Keane: Hopes and Fears: Pitchfork Review
I say "last" because Keane's debut album, Hopes and Fears, is so miserably and calculatedly maudlin that it almost seems capable of killing the trend started by Travis and passed like a relay baton to Starsailor and, eventually, Snow Patrol.
Silly as the lyrics are, they might have more impact if every other song on Hopes and Fears didn't work the same melodramatic, soft-verse/loud-chorus template with the predictability of a bad nü-metal band (or if Chaplin didn't repeat more or less the same sentiment each time).
In addition to nebulous notions of life and love and hazy references to "change" and "the light," Chaplin peppers his songs with vague pronouns-- she, you, and it-- but I predominates.
