Topic: Hemolysis

Blood Flow, Negative Pressure, and Hemolysis During Hemodialysis
The goal of the study was to determine the degree of hemolysis by changes in haptoglobin (HPT) and lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), concentrations in comparison with changes in albumin (ALB), hemoglobin (HGB) concentrations, and hematocrit (HCT) before and after hemodialysis sessions.
Whether this slightly higher hemolysis in dialyses with more negative prepump pressures is of clinical significance is uncertain.
There is no visible hemolysis in routine, monthly, postdialysis blood samples; however, the degree of hemolysis has not been determined by more sensitive methods.

Distant Mental Influence of Rate of Hemolysis
In a novel approach to studying the possible mechanisms of psychic healing, 32 unselected subjects participated in a laboratory experiment in which attempts were made to psychically influence the hemolysis of blood in a test-tube at a distance.
Half of the subjects were randomly assigned to a condition where the blood that they attempted to influence belonged to another person while half were assigned a condition in which the target blood was their own.
All subjects attempted to slow down (protect) the rate of hemolysis (i.e., the breakdown of the blood) in a test-tube.

 Hemolysis Risk
The incidence of hemolysis related to flow restriction could be higher than is clinically recognized.
This provides an early warning of adverse conditions that can cause hemolysis and under-delivery of dialysis.
In one to two minutes per patient, a nurse can check that all dialysis pumps deliver the flow for which they are set.

 ACQUIRED HEMOLYTIC ANEMIAS
Some degree of hemolysis occurs in up to 10 percent of patients with aortic prostheses; mechanical valves are more likely to cause hemolysis than porcine valves.
Schistocytes, reflective of MAHA, are often found on the peripheral smear of patients with DIC, but their absence does not rule out DIC.
Within 24 h of the burns, acute hemolytic anemia can develop with gross hemoglobinuria and spherocytes and schistocytes on the peripheral blood smear.

Hemolysis is the most useful characteristic used in the preliminary identification and classification of streptococci.
