Stem cell transplantation (SCT) is a life saving procedure...
The majority of patients who have undergone SCT will lead productive lives in their own towns and any complications will have to be managed initially by the local physicians.
The conventional myeloablative therapy given before infusion of bone marrow causes organ toxicity, in addition to myelotoxicity.
The mortality as a consequence of this phase may vary from 10-20%.

Age (which is associated with diminished thymopoiesis) and the extent of T-cell depletion (by in vivo or ex vivo manipulation of the graft or by [myelo]lymphoablation) are the major determinants of the relative contributions of these sources to the recovery of T-lymphocyte population after HDIT and SCT [5**].
From a critic's viewpoint, eradication of autoreactive memory T and B lymphocytes by autologous SCT may be impossible, and allogeneic SCT may be necessary to achieve this goal.
In another study [33**], a patient with RA was treated with a myeloablative conditioning regimen, followed by SCT that was T-cell depleted and CD34

Allogeneic stem cell transplantation using cord blood stem cells
Recently, we have performed an analysis comparing outcomes of 98 adults patients with acute leukaemia receiving an unrelated cord blood with 584 adults patients receiving a HLA matched unrelated bone marrow in Eurocord centers after 1998.
The most important results showed by our group were the decreased incidence of acute and chronic graft-versus-host disease, compared to bone marrow transplants.
Further analyses showed that the influence of number of cells in cord blood and of the degree of HLA disparity were mutually interacting on engraftment.

It was in 1939 when the first patient was infused 18 ml of marrow from his brother for cure of aplastic anemia.3 The subsequent identification of HLA antigens, development of cryobiology techniques and better understanding of human immune system lead BMT to a definitive form of therapy for many malignant and benign hematological disorders.
Successful engraftment of cryopreserved autologus bone marrow in patients with malignant lymphoma.
Haematopoietic stem cell transplantation remains the treatment of choice for a variety of benign and malignant blood disorders.1 In this modality Haematopoietic stem cell transplantation is the intravenous infusion of haematopoietic stem and progenitor cells to re-establish marrow function in patients with damaged or defective marrow.
