Glucocorticoid - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As a consequence, glucocorticoids are widely used as drugs to treat inflammatory conditions such as arthritis or dermatitis, and as adjunction therapy for conditions such as autoimmune diseases.
Cortisol (or hydrocortisone) is the most important human glucocorticoid.
These observations suggest a multitude of less dramatic physiologic roles for glucocorticoids.

Management of Postoperative Pain - Glucocorticoids
Glucocorticoids used before or after neurosurgery for cerebral tumors, spinal metastases, head injuries, or acute spinal cord injury may indirectly relieve pain by reducing cerebrospinal fluid formation or tissue edema.
Systemic or intra-articular administration of glucocorticoids before or immediately after arthroscopic surgery (Rasmussen et al., 1998; Wang et al., 1998), lumbar disc surgery (King, 1984; Watters et al., 1989), bunion surgery (Curda, 1983), or hallux valgus correction (Asaboe et al., 1998) is effective in reducing pain or reducing the use of narcotic analgesics postoperatively.
Complications associated with nonsurgical use of epidural glucocorticoids include infection, dural tap, transient headache, and transient increase in pain (Carette et al., 1997).

As such, long-term anti-inflammatory therapy with glucocorticoids can often lead to swelling, skin changes, decreased immunity, and psychological changes.
Rather, the study suggests that testing of other anti-inflammatory compounds such as NSAIDs (examples include aspirin and ibuprofen) or selective COX-2 inhibitors (examples include rofecoxib and celecoxib) is critical in the search for the right combination of therapies for AD.
