H-Net Review: Jerry H. Bentley on The World System: Five Hundred Years or Five Thousand
Frank and Gills argue that the hallmarks that Wallerstein attributes to the modern capitalist world system--most importantly the process of capital accumulation, the establishment of core-periphery relationships, the operation of cycles of expansion and contraction, and the existence of hegemony and rivalry relationships--all apply equally well to premodern as to modern times.
Frank and Gills deal with real historical experiences--as opposed to analytical recommendations, methodological suggestions, or theoretical reflections--in only a single, jointly written essay that charts eight long cycles that they believe drove the economic and political history of the eastern hemisphere between 1700 B.C.E. and 1700 C.E. Their identification of cycles, however, is largely unpersuasive.
Andre Gunder Frank and Barry K. Gills accept Abu-Lughod's argument, but they hold further that the notion of a world system is applicable much earlier than the Mongol era.

Omphalotus illudens: the Jack O'Lantern (MushroomExpert.Com)
Commonly called the "Jack O'Lantern Mushroom," this poisonous species is fairly easy to identify: It grows in clusters on wood, its colors are bright orange, its gills run down the stem, it has a white to pale yellow spore print, and its flesh, when sliced open, is orange (or at least orange ish).
See, what they enjoy is knowing that hundreds of amateur mushroomers, every fall, shut themselves into closets, bathrooms, and garages, eagerly peering through the darkness for hours, waiting for the Jack O'Lantern's gills to luminesce.
After years of trying to see the luminescent gills I have reached the obvious conclusion: mushroom authors are out to make me feel like an idiot.

Diseases of Fish Part 7 Aquarium.Net April 97
The popular name of this family is called "Flukes" and in fact they are skin or gill flukes, which attach themselves to the skin or gills of the fish, and thereby can cause a great deal of damage.
Although in Gyrodactylus the infestation is more typically found on the skin, it often will manifest itself by attacking the gills.
Gills will become massively parasitized and a smear or other examination of the gills should easily determine the cause of the infestation.

But the story of Kidd's final hours also reveals the question at the heart of the case, whether Knox doled out prescriptions indiscriminately, or whether he was the unorthodox and compassionate advocate of patients no one else would treat.

No other amphibian possesses internal gills, and the gills preserved in key Acanthostega fossils make it clear that Acanthostega could breathe with its gills underwater, just like a fish, and could also breathe on land, using lungs.
Acanthostega, although clearly a land-dwelling animals, retained an unmistakable sign of its aquatic ancestry: internal gills.
In other words, it was a true "transitional form." This first amphibian-like tetrapod was, as evolution would have predicted, more fish-like than any tetrapod to follow.

Prior to the development of accessory exchangers, oxygen levels in the nest are enhanced by ‘thrashing’ movements of the bodies of parental adults and probably by outward diffusion of oxygen across the parental gills and body surface.
External gills develop and become functional very early in development and these provide an additional exchange surface while the lungs and internal gills develop.
The physiology of adults of the living genera Neoceratodus, Lepidosiren and Protopterus have been most frequently studied (Liem,1986; Fritsche et al.,1993; Harder et al.,1999) but larval stages have been poorly studied.

 research - respiration
It was suggested that alternating "suction" and "pressure" pumps allowed for the continuous and unidirectional flow of oxygenated water over the gills.
Aquatic vertebrates are faced with one of two options for respiration: physically moving their gills through the water ("ram"), or actively pumping water over their gills via "buccal pumping".
The current model of the mechanics of respiration was described over 40 years ago, and has been incorporated into textbooks and physiological literature alike.

BBC News Sci/Tech Oldest fossil fish caught
They are identifiable, say the scientists, because of their gills and a zigzag arrangement of muscles called myotomes, which are only found in fish.
One of the creatures, Haikouichthys ercaicunensis, has gills which are supported by gill bars and the second, Myllokunmingia fengjiaoa, has a more primitive arrangement of gills, but with a series of identifiable pouch-like structures.
Professor Simon Conway Morris, of the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Cambridge, and Professor Degan Shu, of Northwest University, in Xi'an, China, have been analysing the fossils, along with eight other scientists from China.

 * Flukes - (Aquarium): Definition
Gill flukes may show with red, inflamed gills, but otherwise many fish flukes are micro scopic (some of the largest being just a few mm, but mostly smaller), and so confirmed diagnosis by physical appearence alone is not possible.
Symptoms: The fish scrapes itself against objects, rapid gill movement, mucus covering the gills or body, the gills or fins may be eaten away, the skin may become reddened.
Adding medication might be of value in some of these situations, but would be useless or could even worsen the others.
