 Gastric Ulcer -- eCureMe.com
This is a group of medicines that includes things such as ibuprofen, naproxen, indomethacin, etc. These drugs are most often used to treat arthritis, headaches, back pain, and other conditions that cause pain and inflammation.
Peptic ulcers are areas of weakness or "depressions" that develop in the wall of the stomach or intestines, causing pain or discomfort.
Generally, with these medicines, duodenal ulcers heal within 4-6 weeks and gastric ulcers heal within 6-8 weeks.

 Peptic Ulcers - health information
Gastric ulcer pain may be felt in the same place as the pain of duodenal ulcer or slightly higher up.
Fortunately, there are a number of treatments that relieve the discomfort associated with ulcers and, other treatments to actually heal the ulcer, itself.
Learning how your ulcer may have developed and understanding what irritates it and keeps it from healing will help you to work with your physician in establishing the most effective treatment plan.

 Peptic Ulcer
Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory condition of the colon and rectum, the lowermost portions of the intestines.
In fact, recent research has shown that the chances of an ulcer healing and staying healed are better if a patient quits smoking and takes no medication than if the patient continues to smoke and receives drug treatment.
About 50 percent of ulcer patients experience another episode within 1 to 2 years after the previous ulcer has healed.

Stomach cancer and gastric or duodenal ulcer disease
This increase in cancer incidence was not found in a subgroup of 8,646 patients with pre-pyloric gastric ulcers, however.
The development of atrophic gastritis may protect against duodenal ulcer disease, however, which would explain the negative correlation found here between duodenal ulcer and gastric cancer.
The cohort consisted of 29,287 patients with gastric ulcer only, 24,456 with duodenal ulcers and 4.193 with both (analyzed separately).

Gastric Ulcer Prophylaxis in the Critically Ill Equine Neonate
Superficial ulcers in the gastric glandular mucosa have also been observed and these also heal without treatment or clinical incidence [ 1-4, 7 ].
A majority of the ulcers were located in the squamous gastric mucosa and the results of the study revealed that after 14 days of treatment the sucralfate ulcer healing was not enhanced [ 13 ].
Early treatment of sepsis, sufficient oxygenation, improved monitoring, institution of enteral feedings and improved nursing all may contribute to the reduction in clinically relevant gastric ulcers.

News - Bisphosphonate Differ In Gastric-Ulcer Rates
At Day 15, the incidences of gastric ulcers in the risedronate group was 3.3 percent and in the alendronate group 8.7 percent.
Overall, gastric ulcers of 3 mm or greater were seen in 6 percent of evaluable subjects in the risedronate group.
In contrast, double the proportion of such ulcers were found in the alendronate group during treatment; there were 12.1 percent in the alendronate group.

 Gastric Ulcer
The doctor may perform an endoscopy and imaging studies to determine if the patient has a gastric ulcer.
The doctor may suspect gastric ulcers based on risk factors such as male sex, age over 45, location of pain, anemia, history of using NSAIDs, history of heavy smoking and alcohol use, and family history of ulcers or stomach cancer.
About 30% of patients with gastric ulcers are awakened by pain at night.

Barium contrast studies were also in vogue by 1925 overtaking the rigid gastroscopes which were awkward to use.
The first 6 decades saw the dominance of surgery in the treatment of peptic ulcer.
The foundations of ulcer therapy were laid in ancient times when powdered coral, sea shell or chalk was used to treat dyspepsia long before it was realized that PUD was causing the pain.

Many ulcer patients experience minimal indigestion or no discomfort at all.
Some patients have persistent pain even after an ulcer is completely healed by medication.
An upper endoscopy is more accurate, but involves sedation of the patient and the insertion of a flexible tube through the mouth to inspect the stomach, esophagus, and duodenum.

 Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome
Strategies of anti-ulcer therapy currently in use for horses are those that have been developed for humans.
In summary, there is no question that antacid treatment in particular has been effective in reducing the severity of signs of, and promoted lesion healing in some forms of EGUS, especially squamous mucosal lesions associated with intense training where there is no interruption of gastric emptying.
Recent studies in our laboratory suggest that the source of the pentagastrin-induced non-acid secretion mentioned above is most likely pancreatic in origin, back flowing through a partially open pyloric sphincter, which is the gate-keeper between stomach and small intestine.

Stress may make you experience more pain from an ulcer and it may make it more difficult to heal from an ulcer.
For a variety of reasons, the protective mechanisms may become faulty, leading to a breakdown of the lining.

 GASTRIC ULCER
Should the stomach become adherent to another organ, and fatal perforation be thus prevented, chronic indigestion may persist, owing to interference with the natural movements of the stomach.
The general condition of the patient with gastric ulcer is, as a rule, that of extreme ill-health, with pallor, emaciation and debility.
First among the symptoms is pain, which is present at all times, but is markedly increased after food.

Survey of current practices among members of CAG in the follow-up of patients diagnosed with gastric ulcer
Respondents were asked to indicate their practice setting and to estimate the proportion of gastric ulcer patients in whom they perform follow-up endoscopy.
The practice and attitudes of physician members of the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology (CAG) on the follow-up of such patients were assessed.
The most common reasons influencing this choice were to ensure healing (86.3%) and to confirm the benign nature of the lesion (79.5%).

Rarely now, some ulcers perforate and require surgery.
Anti-acid treatments such as cimetidine, ranitidine and antacids may reduce symptoms but will not clear the infection.
The most effective treatments are combinations of antibiotics ( Erythromycin, Ampicillin, Tetracycline, Metronidazole) and proton pump inhibitors.

Ferret Gastric Ulcer / Helicobacter FAQ
This "triple therapy" has been shown to be effective in man, and to a large part effective in ferrets, but must be continued for 4-6 weeks.
For these reasons, any treatment of gastric ulcers in ferrets should be combined with concomitant antimicrobial therapy for Helicobacter mustelae.
There are numerous treatments for H. mustelae in ferrets, most of which have been derived from the treatment of H. pylori, a common bacterium in man, which has been definitively linked to the development of gastric ulcers in man.

The latter technique removes the glare in the highlights, but I prefer the sense of depth afforded by the conventional "dry" technique, above.
Even biopsies are not 100% accurate in picking up a cancer, so negative pathology reports in such cases may provide false reassurance.
The criteria for grossly and endoscopically distinguishing benign ulcers from cancer are not absolute, which is why it is necessary to perform a biopsy on any non-healing gastric ulcer.

 Ulcer of the Stomach
• The depth of the ulcer is variable with some showing only mucosal involvement in which case they are called erosions in contrast to deeply penetrating ulcers which involve submucosa and deeper layers
• Chronicity and recurrence are characteristic of peptic ulcers, and at least 50% of patients with gastric ulcers will have recurrent ulcers, although many of these are silent
• The classic symptoms of peptic ulcer include: burning epigastric pain occuring 1-3 hours after a meal or waking the patient at night; relief of pain with food or antacids; and episodic pain occuring in clusters

Anti-gastric ulcer Activity of Hardwickic acid from Plau Yai (Croton oblongifolius Roxb.)
The anti-gastric ulcer activity of hardwickic acid, a compound isolated from a Thai medicinal plant "Plau Yai" ( Croton oblongifolius, Euphorbiaceae) was assessed in comparison with the reference drugs using various experimental models in rats.
Anyhow, it is not possible to exclude that the anti-ulcer effect of hardwickic acid is mediated by an inhibition of 5-lipoxygenase pathway or leukotriene's antagonistic activity, since other studies have indicated the roles of leukotrienes, lipoxygenase derived metabolites of arachidonic acid in the experimental models of gastric ulcers induced by ethanol, indomethacin and stress.
Additionally, antioxidant activity of hardwickic acid may also play a role in the other gastroprotective mechanisms of hardwickic acid.

 Disease - Gastric Ulcer
Stomach ulcers are more complicated than duodenal ulcers, however, but the effectiveness of antibiotic treatment for stomach ulcers appears to be similar to that seen in duodenal ulcers (cure rate 70-90% if H.pylori is eradicated).
If H. pylori is not present, then treatment with acid-reducing drugs or prostaglandins may be successful.
These stomach ulcers may benefit from antibiotic treatment if Helicobacter pylori is also present.
