Guideline 68 Section 5: Management of functional dyspepsia
However, when prescription of medication is being contemplated, clinicians should appreciate that in functional dyspepsia, as in all other functional GI disorders, there is a substantial placebo response to therapy that constrains the interpretation of apparent treatment effectiveness in individual patients.
Functional dyspepsia is very common and is not itself serious, though the discomfort, pain, distension and fullness which are perfectly genuine, are often unpleasant and bothersome.
No drug therapies have been found to have a high success rate in the treatment of functional dyspepsia though it should also be acknowledged that there is no scientific basis for supposing that all patients with functional dyspepsia should respond to the same pharmacological approach.

In addition, these patients also had high-pressure duodenal contractions that were associated with abdominal pain during the study period.

For example, functional diseases of the stomach and intestines may be shown ultimately to be associated with reduced or increased levels of normal chemicals within the gastrointestinal organs, the spinal cord, or the brain.
The amount of research that has been done with functional disorders is greatest in the esophagus and stomach (e.g., non-cardiac chest pain, dyspepsia), perhaps because these organs are easiest to reach and study.
A third distinct functional disorder is non-cardiac chest pain.

Functional dyspepsia is generally a benign condition, which, by definition, has no pathologic correlation.
Functional dyspepsia usually calls first for reassurance and symptomatic treatment with observation over time.
Changes in the clinical state may require more extensive evaluation if new problems arise or if symptoms persist and become more disabling; however, for most patients with functional dyspepsia, continued observation, support, and reassurance, with minimal diagnostic studies, suffice.
