Sigmund Freud - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The goal of Freudian therapy, or psychoanalysis, was to bring to consciousness repressed thoughts and feelings, in order to allow the patient to develop a stronger ego.
Classically, the bringing of unconscious thoughts and feelings to consciousness is brought about by encouraging the patient to talk in "free association" and to talk about dreams.
Some clinical psychologists have modified this approach and have developed a variety of "psychodynamic" models and therapies.

 The Feminine Mystique
Freudian psychology, with its emphasis on freedom from a repressive morality to achieve sexual fulfilment, was part of the ideology of women& emancipation.
Orthodox Freudians still profess to believe in the sexual origin of all neurosis, and since they look for unconscious sexual memories in their patients, and translate what they hear into sexual symbols, they still manage to find what they are looking for.
The feminine mystique derived its power from Freudian thought; for it was an idea born of Freud, which led women, and those who studied them, to misinterpret their mothers’ frustrations, and their fathers’ and brothers’ and husbands’ resentments and inadequacies, and their own emotions and possible choices in life.

 Freudian slip
I was trained in Freudian or psychodynamic therapy and although I evolved my thinking in the direction of the shorter term therapies, I have always affirmed that there is a place for it among some selected patients.
The Freudian slip, dreams and free associations are to Freudian therapists the key to the unconscious.
Interestingly, if they pointed out that, I have said many times, that therapy should be scientific and that often Freudian therapy falls short, they would have had a point.

 Expert About fr:Freudian
Growing up within a society that held Freudian analysis as the new diversion, Webster was given early access to the analyst's couch: The history of mental illness in her mother's family kept her there.
Paradoxically, Webster remains a good Freudian throughout the memoir, for even though she rejects psychoanalysis as a therapy, she embraces it as an interpretive technique.
Looking back she identifies the problems in her own life that were caused bu her mother's application of Freudian theory to their family, and she discusses her own analysts' inability to help her cope with the death of her father and the disintegration of her first marriage.

AllRefer.com - psychoanalysis : Criticisms of and Changes in Freudian Psychoanalysis (Psychology And Psychiatry) - ...
For Freudian analysis to reach its intended conclusions, the psychoanalyst required frequent sessions with a client over a period of years: today, the prohibitive costs of such methods compels most to seek other forms of psychiatric care.
The subject matter of Freudian analysis has also fallen into disuse, even among those who still practice psychoanalysis: early childhood receives much less emphasis, and there is generally more focus on problems the client is currently experiencing.
These critics of Freud stressed the interpersonal aspect of the analyst-patient relationship (transference), and placed more emphasis on the processes of the ego.

Many forms of therapy make use of the client's dreams, but Freudian interpretation is distinct in the tendency to find sexual meanings.
However, in therapy, there is the therapist, who is trained to recognize certain clues to problems and their solutions that the client would overlook.
In fact, in Freudian therapy, the therapist practically disappears.

 Irigaray
She points to the visual construct of the Freudian position as being the reason the penis is exalted, it can be seen and this in turn leads to the privileging of the male body.
Irigaray states that true heterosexuality is impossible within the Freudian system because a male's desire is to reunite with the mother's body and the female's desire is to obtain a penis.
Yet, Freud himself separates the female sexual organs into at least two parts, the clitoris, which he views as a little penis and the vagina, which is simply a hole that the penis goes into in order to facilitate ejaculation.

 D2: A Freud Glossary
You should be able to recognize and use major concepts like transference/counter-transference, to distinguish actual from psychoneurosis, to understand the transition from Freud's pre-psychoanalytic "Seduction Theory" to his later Oedipal theory of the cause of neuroses, and to recognize examples of these concepts in Freud's accounts of hysteria (e.g., "Dora").
The interpretation of a dream, like that of a neurotic symptom or slip, involves working backwards from the conscious to the presumed unconscious thoughts by means of free association -- allowing all ideas connected to the elements of the dream into consciousness.
You should understand why psychoanalysis is so concerned with allegedly unconscious mental processes, and why interpretation of "Freudian slips, "screen memories," and dreams (e.g., "Irma") are deemed important.

 Freud's personality theory
The id is the Freudian structure of personality that consists of instincts, which are an individual’s reservoir of psychic energy.
As children experience the demands and constraints of reality, a new structure of personality emerges- the ego, the Freudian structure of personality that deals with the demands of reality.
Freud believed that personality has three structures: the id, the ego, and the superego.

Book Review: Freudian Fraud: The Malignant Effect of Freud's Theory on American Thought and Culture
THIS BOOK has its flaws, especially with regard to Freudian thought, but its contributions to our understanding of how Freudian concepts were used to transform American culture are important and largely unknown.
Later chapters of the book focus on Freud's influence, again distorted, on our child-rearing practices; and on his impact on America's prison reform movement: here Freud was used-misused-to remove the concept of responsibility from criminal behavior.
He points out that research has reliably failed to substantiate Freudian concepts.

Chapter 1: Freud's Theory of Art and Creativity
Ehrenzweig believed that a substantial revision of traditional Freudian theory was needed, to fit in with the facts of artistic experience.
This assumes, however, that the conscious ego is the locus of aesthetic experience; a model pre-supposing an ordered, rational structure: the ego as a stabilising and synthesising force.
Indeed, he argues (as do British analysts M. Milner and C. Rycroft, for example) that there is probably less distinction than is usually accepted between primary and secondary process functioning.

These new theories, however, hold many of the same underlying beliefs of psychoanalysis, most importantly the view of the unconscious as an important drive in human emotions, cognitions, and behaviors.
The idea of defense mechanisms related to the unconscious have also been maintained in many of these new theories as well as the importance of early development of the formation of the personality.
As such, these new theories, arising from psychoanalytic thought and the writings of Freud, still maintain many Freudian components.

 Re: "blows" and Freudian slip
The unconscious mind is a mechanism for dealing with thoughts or feelings that have been repressed by the conscious mind.
It's call "Freudian" because Freud theorised that all people have both a conscious and unconscious mind.
I don't know of other phrases that begin with the word Freudian but I have heard things referred to as "Freudian" as a way of indicating that they bear some relation to some of Freud's theories, usually the Oedipus "complex" or "penis envy".

Bakhtin Circle [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]
This indicates a turning towards a more Hegelian approach to questions of cultural and philosophical development, while the recasting of the Freudian superego in terms of the repression of unofficial ideologies by an official ideology anticipates one of the central themes that would occupy Bakhtin in the 1930s and 1940s.
It must be noted, however, that Voloshinov does not pay any attention to Freud's later work on cultural phenomena and thus presents a rather one-sided view of contemporary psychology.
Furthermore, Freudianism is treated as a manifestation of 'bourgeois decay' very much in the spirit of the later Lukács.

I would agree today that building an analysis of the horror genre on Freudian theory made it readily vulnerable to attack by those uneasy with out politics.
Relatively speaking, our radical political commitment has been generally ignored, despite the fact that it embodies the foundation of our arguments.
The Freudian analogy holds good for James Whale's Frankenstein (1931), but there, in Karloff's make-up, clothing, gestures and performance, his threats and pleadings, we can also see the working-class, the poor, the homeless, the dispossessed, suggesting a parallel between psychological repression and social oppression.
