Foods rich in folate may reduce risk of stroke
The inverse relationship between dietary folate and incidence of stroke and cardiovascular disease was consistent across genders, levels of physical activity and tobacco use.
For consumers, Bazzano says the results of this study mean that it is likely that dietary intake of folate can affect the risk of stroke.
DALLAS, May 3 - For the first time, high dietary folate was found to decrease the incidence of stroke, according to a 20-year study reported in today's Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association.

 Folate
Long-term folate supplementation was found, in another study, to reduce the incidence of colorectal neoplasia by 62% in subjects with extensive chronic ulcerative colitis.
Given that there are some reports, as noted above, in which supplemental folic acid appeared to confer benefit in subjects with pre-cancerous lesions, it is not possible to assess risk in this regard without further research, though caution, as expressed by the researcher quoted above, appears to be indicated.
"Therefore," this researcher concluded, "it appears that folate supplementation should be implemented before the development of precursor lesions in the target organ or in individuals free of any evidence of neoplastic foci."

Large doses of folate might help keep high blood pressure under control
Now a major study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association has confirmed what smaller studies had only hinted at: that women who consume large amounts of folate (on the order of 1,000 micrograms a day) have a lower risk of developing hypertension--for younger women, significantly lower.
Results of a recent study need much more consideration, experts say, but the results seem to show what has long been suspected: women who consumed about 1,000 micrograms per day of folate, had lower blood pressures, on average, than other women.
The report, part of the ongoing Nurses' Health Study, tracked the folate intake of nearly 94,000 women ages 27 to 44 over eight years and found that those who consumed at least 1,000 micrograms a day had a 46% lower risk of high blood pressure than women who took less than 200 a day.
