The following disease processes should be familiar to the surgical trainee, and their appearance demonstrated when feasible during esophagogastroduodenoscopy.
While actual performance of all the above therapeutic procedures is recommended, a minimum knowledge should include familiarity with all of them and some experience with this group of procedures.
The surgical trainee must have an understanding of the indications for these procedures and the ability to undertake the appropriate therapeutic maneuvers.

Title Esophagogastroduodenoscopy by family physicians: a national multisite study of 717 procedures [see comments].
29(8):572-4, 1997 Sep. Abstract BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) is a procedure that has been gaining interest among family physicians.
The first 717 EGDs performed by family physicians from 8 separate office practices provide a practical and safe rationale for selected cognitive and psychomotor aspects of continuing medical education after residency training.

The use of esophagogastroduodenoscopy to treat GI bleeding has markedly enhanced the value of this procedure.
After removing the patient's dentures or nonpermanent bridges, the examiner passes the instrument under direct vision through the pharynx to examine the entire esophagus and stomach and the first two portions of the duodenum.

Oxygen Saturation during Esophagogastroduodenoscopy in Children
When compared with sedation, general anaesthesia is a safer technique that minimises the incidence of hypoxia and affords the gastroenterologist better operating conditions.
In the general anaesthesia group all patients scored 1, but in the sedation group a score of 1 was achieved in only two patients, 2 in eight patients and 3 in ten patients.
The purpose of this study was to compare the occurrence of desaturation during intravenous sedation which occurs during general anaesthesia in patients under going esophagogastroduodenoscopy.

Publication Details - David Drover - Stanford University School of Medicine
The purpose of this study was to describe the pharmacodynamic interaction of remifentanil and propofol when used in combination for esophagogastroduodenoscopy in pediatric patients.
The concentration of propofol alone associated with 50% probability of no response was 3.7 microg/ml (SE, 0.4 microg/ml), and this was decreased to 2.8 microg/ml (SE, 0.1 microg/ml) when used in combination with remifentanil.
Because both propofol and remifentanil are associated with rapid onset and offset, the combination of these two drugs may be particularly useful for procedures of short duration, including esophagogastroduodenoscopy.

Diagnostic and therapeutic esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) is a common endoscopic procedure performed for suspected and proven lesions of the upper gastrointestinal tract.
The endoscope, a long, flexible tube-like instrument, is passed from the patient's mouth into the upper gastrointestinal tract and allows direct visualization of the entire esophagus, stomach, duodenum and jejunum, as appropriate.
The patient’s medical record should contain documentation that fully supports the medical necessity for esophagogastroduodenoscopy as it is covered by Medicare (please see “Indications and Limitations of Coverage and/or Medical Necessity").

Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) is a procedure during which a small flexible endoscope is introduced through the mouth (or with smaller caliber endoscopes, through the nose) and advanced through the pharynx, esophagus, stomach, and duodenum.
In particular, all drug doses, indications, and contraindications should be confirmed in the package insert.
An enteroscope, a longer endoscope, can be introduced beyond the ligament of Treitz into the jejunum.
