American Family Physician: Slipped capital femoral epiphysis - includes patient information
The unstable slipped capital femoral epiphysis behaves much more like an acute fracture and has a poorer prognosis because it carries an increased risk of avascular necrosis.
Children with a minimal slipped capital femoral epiphysis experience only slight loss of internal rotation of the hip and have pain only at the extremes of motion.
It is the most common hip disorder in adolescents, but because of the anatomic innervation of the hip and the referred nature of the pain, it often presents with groin, thigh or knee pain rather than, hip pain.

 Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis
Your doctor will consider how long your child has been limping, his or her age, and whether there is any focal pain or stiffness to direct the investigation.
Your child should report any pain in the hip or knee immediately so that treatment can begin before any significant deformity develops.
Children with a slipped epiphysis will often complain of knee pain referred from the hip area.

 SLIPPED FEMORAL EPIPHYSIS
Once growth of the child ceases, the join fuses and the condition is halted.
This is also associated with major slips and surgical replacement of the epiphysis.
In this condition, the epiphysis remains in its normal position within the hip socket.

Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis - Symptoms, Treatment and Prevention
If the displacement is greater and hip motion is severely limited, more extensive surgery is necessary.
What type of surgical procedure will be used?
Endocrine factors may also play a part, but no specific endocrine abnormality has been proved.

In this condition, a displacement occurs in the upper epiphysis while the bone is still growing.
You should promptly seek professional medical care if you have any concern about your health, and you should always consult your physician before starting a fitness regimen.

Bone infarction occurs, especially in the subchondral cortical bone, while articular cartilage continues to grow.
Frog leg views of the affected hip are very helpful.
Background: Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease (LCPD) is the name given to idiopathic osteonecrosis of the capital femoral epiphysis of the femoral head.

Slipped femoral capital epiphysis - Eurorad - Clinical Case 1814 - Resident
An AP view may not be sufficient to reveal the slippage; a frog lateral view is often necessary to show the slippage better.
There are controversies regarding the treatment and also regarding the prophylactic pinning of the contralateral hip.
In girls it tends to occur at the same frequency (9-18% as an initial presentation) and the other side is affected within 6 months of the initial presentation.

Clinical Details: Clinical presentation often is misleading, with only 50% of patients presenting with hip pain and 25% presenting with knee pain.
Unfortunately, SCFE frequently is misdiagnosed, and it has symptoms that can be misleading.
The treatment of SCFE entails stabilizing the hip.

This fracture often involves the articular surface, making this a high-risk injury for chronic disability as in SH-III injuries.
Radiographic confirmation of clinical SH-I fractures may be made later during orthopedic follow-up by stress views or the presence of new bone formation along the physis approximately 7-10 days post-injury.
If there is tenderness over the physis of the distal radius or ulna, a clinical diagnosis of an SH-I fracture of this area should be made.

Gray's Anatomy - The Fore-brain or Prosencephalon - Yahoo! Reference
The pineal body ( corpus pineale; epiphysis) is a small, conical, reddish-gray body which lies in the depression between the superior colliculi.
Most of its fibers are, however, directed downward and form a bundle, the fasciculus retroflexus of Meynert, which passes medial to the red nucleus, and, after decussating with the corresponding fasciculus of the opposite side, ends in the interpeduncular ganglion.
It is placed beneath the splenium of the corpus callosum, but is separated from this by the tela chorioidea of the third ventricle, the lower layer of which envelops it.

Distally the diaphysis enlarges to the distal epiphysis, which forms the lateral malleolus, which articulates with the tibial tarsal bone.
The distal epiphysis also forms the medial malleolus, which is the proximal attachment of the medial collateral ligament of the talocrural joint.
At some point in development the proximal epiphysis is attached to the tibial tuberosity epiphysis.

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is a condition of the hip joint that affects children.
The more severe the case, the greater the likelihood the child will experience limited hip motion, differences in leg lengths, and further hip problems in adulthood.
SCFE occurs in approximately two out of 100,000 children and is more likely to occur in boys than girls.

The epiphysial centers of the humerus, ulna and radius also unite with their diaphysial centers in a specific sequence.   To determine the age at which pitching is safe, we need to learn when these critical baseball pitching epiphysial and diaphysial centers unite.
Critical pitching epiphysis remain non-united through adolescence.   Consequently, they are susceptible to irreversible injury.   The following is a listing of the order in which the critical baseball pitching epiphyses appear.
From birth through early adolescence, epiphysial ossification centers sequentially appear.   In the mid-shaft of the pitching arm’s long bones, i.
