Entheogen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The perception that the broad sense of the term "entheogen" is used as a euphemism by hallucinogenic drug-users bothers both critics and proponents of the secular use of hallucinogenic drugs.
In particular, the word fills a vacuum for those users of entheogens who feel that the term "hallucinogen", which remains common in medical, chemical and anthropological literature, denigrates their experience and the world view in which it is integrated.
The first American entheogen to be subject to scientific analysis was the peyote cactus (Lophophora williamsii).

 Maximal Entheogen Theory of Religion
The most conservative of the entheogen theories, the "literalist entheogenic" position in which the founding figure consumed entheogens, is very literalist while being entheogenic as well, which again makes the first-order approximation, "literalist versus entheogenic", problematic.
There is a weak entheogen theory and a strong entheogen theory.
Ken Wilber advocates this view, rather than the entheogen initiation view which holds that for all intents and purposes, five to ten entheogen sessions, combined with a college course on systematic theory of ego death, brings a mind to perfection and sacrifices the child-thinking for adult-thinking -- with any remaining development being nonessential refinement.

 Entheogen
Entheogens – psychedelic drugs used in a religious context – can also produce mystical experiences (peak experiences, states of unitive consciousness, intense primary religious experiences) with the same cluster of effects.
Religious writings on entheogens contain a large number of complex arguments about whether entheogen-induced mystical experiences are genuine religious experiences and a large number of considerations about how one goes about interpreting these experiences as religious phenomena.
Combined observations from biology, medicine, religion, psychology, and psychotherapy point to the possibility of a fascinating relationship among entheogens (psychoactive plants and chemicals used in a religious context), mystical experiences, and the immune system – that entheogen-induced mystical experiences may strengthen the immune system.

Because they produce the primary experience on which faith is inspired, "entheogens prove that no intermediary is necessary," states Clark Heinrich, author of _God Without Religion_ (yet unpublished) and _Strange Fruit_ (to be published in the US by Inner Traditions), a speculative history about the role of the Amanita Muscaria mushroom in several world religions.
