Rapid MGP Medium - for Enterococcus
Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium are MGP negative.
Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium, components of the human intestinal tract, are the two most frequently encountered enterococci in the clinical laboratory.
Other species, such as Enterococcus casseliflavus and Enterococcus gallinarum, are not commonly encountered in the clinical setting but are significant because they display intrinsic resistance to vancomycin.

The primary enterococcus density-HCGI relationship used in the model was drawn from prospective health risk studies of sewage exposure conducted by Cabelli et al.
Three assumptions were tested in the model regarding a) the relationship between enterococcus density and gastrointestinal illness risk, b) bathing activity levels at sampling locations, and c) the fraction of beachgoers who bathed during beach closure days.
The second relationship used in the model was drawn from a study of exposure to storm drain runoff conducted by Haile et al.

The genetic material which makes enterococci resistant to vancomycin has probably been passed on from other types of bacteria that do not cause human disease but which are already vancomycin-resistant.

However in 1986 the first vancomycin-resistant enterococcus (VRE) was found in France and a year later the first strain was isolated in the UK.
