It was largely supplanted by the Cannon-Bard theory, but of late, it has made something of a come-back, although the notion of causality is not as strong and there is ongoing uncertainty as to the chicken-and-egg question of which comes first, physiological and emotional feelings.

Emotion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In psychology and common use, emotion is an aspect of a human being's mental state, normally based in or tied to the person's internal (physical) and external (social) sensory feeling.
Thus it is not difficult to defend the position that emotion is, to a high degree, dependent on social phenomena, expectations, norms, and conditioned behavior of the group in which an individual lives.
William James in the 1800's believed that emotional experience is largely due to the experience of bodily changes.

Approaching A Theory of Emotion - An Interview With Candace Pert, Ph.D. Approaching A Theory of Emotion:
She is helping to formulate, for the first time, a unified theory of emotion.
The real, true emotions that need to be expressed are in the body, trying to move up and be expressed and thereby integrated.

Specifically, the "emotion center" of the brain, the limbic system, is comprised of subcortical structures such as the amygdala, septal area, and hippocampus, and cortical structures such as the hippocampus and the cingulate gyrus.
I argue that an activity theory --which regards emotions as interdependent and interpenetrating with other cultural phenomena-- is central for the cultural psychology of emotions.
The activity basis of emotions and emotion concepts is further illustrated by gender differences in emotions.

 [No title]
Despite the recognition of the importance of emotion for human experience evidenced in the writings of both of psychology's founders, Wundt and James, "research and theory about emotions in mainstream psychology is strikingly impoverished" (Waters, 1992).
In previous incarnations (the dark ages of emotion theory), emotion theory could be seen as subsumed by motivation theories and evolutionary theories of behaviour.
That emotions might be better studied as components of the whole self, a self embedded in specific socio-historical relations, highlights the futility of reductionistic studies of human actors, and points to psychological studies of tripartite beings whose qualities of acting, thinking and feeling are necessarily intertwined.

The Theory of Emotion. (I) Emotional Attitudes.
The necessity of bringing the two theories together may be seen from the fact that the very phrase 'expression of emotion,' as well as Darwin's method of stating the matter, begs the question of the relation of emotion to organic peripheral action, in that it assumes the former as prior and the latter as secondary.
Mead's 1895 paper, "A Theory of Emotion from the Physiological Standpoint," is an extension of Dewey's ideas into physiological psychology.
If the attitude is wholly accidental, then the emotion itself is brute and insignificant, upon a theory which holds that the emotion is the 'feel' of such an attitude.

Science Forums and Debate - James-Lange theory of emotion
The Cannon-Bard theory of emotion on the other hand, says basically the opposite: that we cry because we are sad.
Their argument (as far as I recall) was that immediate response to emotional stimuli was visceral (autonomic), and that the emotional response was determined by these autonomic changes.
The James-Lange theory states that we experience emotion in response to physiological changes in our body.

 2-factor theory of emotion
It is a classic, and provides the basis for their theory of emotion which they called "two-factor theory." In a nutshell, 2-factor theory proposes that in order to experience emotion, we must be aroused and must also cognitively label the arousal (usually by attributing it to some external event).
The self-reported emotional states of the participants were evaluated in all conditions.
So in order for emotion to be experienced, there had to be arousal PLUS an external attribution for the arousal.
