 s030305d - Ehrlichiosis
Our objective was to review data on the clinical presentation, laboratory and epidemiological findings, therapy, and diagnostic procedures of patients with human ehrlichiosis due to E chaffeensis.
Abstract: Canine ehrlichiosis, previously thought to be restricted to dogs, has gained prominence in the human population since 1986.

WSAVA 2001 - Ehrlichiosis: New Developments
In many respects, the immunopathogenic consequences of tick-borne diseases such as ehrlichiosis are similar among infected animal and human patients.
A recent experimental study documented treatment failure in three of five dogs treated with 10 mg/kg of doxycycline for seven days.(5) Generally, a duration of therapy longer than seven days is recommended; therefore, the relevance of this experimental observation to treatment outcome in natural infection awaits additional study.
The experimental characterization of the immunopathologic response of animals to various tick-transmitted organisms has provided important insights as to the pathogenic consequences that would be expected in humans.

Species Jump: Human Ehrlichiosis- Mutant or Emergence?
The first case of human ehrlichiosis was reported in Japan in 1954.
In 1986 a new strain emerged as a human pathogen responsible for a Michigan outbreak of ehrlichiosis.
Ehrlichia are gram negative, nonmotile, obligate intracellular coccobacilli belonging to the family Rickettsiaceae with much similarity both in structure and disease to the pathogens responsible for Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever,Q-fever, and Typhus.

 Canine Blood Disease - Ehrlichia
We do not practice in a area in which ehrlichiosis is common and therefore do not have much practical experience with this.
The skin signs seen with this disease include loss of hair, scaling of the skin, ulceration of the skin on the limbs or ears, formation of nodules on the body and sometimes pustules.
Glen- Tetracyclines, especially doxycycline, seem to be very effective for ehrlichiosis.

Ehrlichiosis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Clinical signs of human ehrlichiosis include fever, headache, eye pain, and gastrointestinal upset.
Prognosis: The prognosis is good for dogs with acute ehrlichiosis.
Dogs with severe cases of chronic ehrlichiosis cannot be cured, but supportive care and treatment of diseases secondary to the infection, such as anemia, can help stabilize the dog.

 CANINE EHRLICHIOSIS
In areas where ehrlichiosis is common, many dogs are seen during the acute phase.
Drugs in the tetracycline family are the first choice to rid the dog of the organism that causes ehrlichiosis.
Signs of ehrlichiosis can be divided into three stages: acute (early disease), subclinical (no outward signs of disease), and chronic (long-standing infection).

American Lyme Disease Foundation - Lyme Disease
Onset of ehrlichiosis generally begins within a week of a tick bite, and often includes fever, severe headaches, malaise, muscle pains, and chills.
Performed consistently, this ritual is perhaps the single most effective current method for prevention of ehrlichiosis.
Unlike Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis is considered an acute infection without chronic long-term consequences.

It has been the experience of people who have owned many Ehrlichia infected dogs, that this disease does not remain dormant, it slowly and steadily grows within the dogs system.
If used soon enough, both Tetracycline and Doxicycline (at variable treatment lengths) have a 98% success rate at curing dogs of Ehrlichiosis.
The organism is called Ehrlichia, the disease is called Ehrlichiosis.

Ehrlichiosis Now Second Most Prevalent Tick-Associated Disease, Yale Study Shows
"As doctors and patients become more familiar with ehrlichiosis, it is likely there will be a greater recognition factor, as has happened in the past for Lyme disease," said Dr. Jacob IJdo, a rheumatologist and lead author of the study.
Approximately 25 percent of all patients tested were found to have ehrlichiosis.

Human Granulocytic Ehrlichiosis -- New York, 1995
As of August 15, 1995, medical records and/or clinical information had been reviewed for 68 patients with suspected ehrlichiosis: 50 had onset in 1995; 17, in 1994; and one, in 1992.
A probable case of HGE was defined as a single antibody titer greater than or equal to 64 by immunofluorescent assay to E. equi or the identification of organisms (morulae) in granulocytes on a peripheral blood smear from a patient with an acute illness characterized by fever, headache, myalgia, and/or malaise.
Physicians evaluating patients with an acute febrile illness should consider ehrlichiosis in the differential diagnosis, particularly if the patient is leukopenic or thrombocytopenic, and should solicit a history of known or possible exposure to ticks.

However, for some cats a positive response to therapy was a criterion for the diagnosis of ehrlichiosis.
