Insect Physiology Online - Eclosion Hormone Abstracts
Prior to ecdysis to the pupal stage, pre- ecdysis behavior and its underlying motor pattern are markedly attenuated.
Developing insects repeatedly shed their cuticle by means of a stereotyped behavior called ecdysis, thought to be initiated by the brain peptide eclosion hormone.
Each molt culminates in ecdysis behavior, during which the old cuticle is shed.

 Neuroethology: Ecdysis in Manduca Sexta
Ecdysis behavior is characterised by a distinctly different motor pattern than that which is demonstrated during pre-ecdysis behavior.
Due to their latter attributes, hornworms have been viewed as a particularly appealing system to researchers interested in neuroethological topics such as ecdysis behavior.
This lasts from 60 to 80 min, occurs approximately 1.5 hours prior to ecdysis and is known as pre-ecdysis behavior.

Thus, ecdysis behavior is a good model system for understanding how behavior is coordinated with development, how neuropeptides and neurohormones regulate behavior, and how the circadian (biological) clock causes behaviors to be express a circadian rhythmicity.
The long-term goal of this work is to understand how ecdysis behavior is triggered, and how its timing is coordinated with development and circadian rhythmicity.
Most of our work is carried out using Drosophila, taking advantage of the genetic and molecular tools available in this organism to identify components involved in the control of ecdysis behavior, and determine their role in vivo.

Some scorpions such as the Urodacus genera tend to shed their old skin once a year at about the same time, in response to seasonal changes and food availability.
The remaining flexible membranes between sections is to allow for the articulated movement of the various body parts.
This is a vulnerable period normally spent within closed quarters to keep out potential predators and also maintain the correct climatic conditions.

Remember, that for the eclosion hormones to trigger ecdysis behaviors, the organism must first be exposed to the ecdysteroids.
The specialized ecdysis behaviors are very stereotyped and are triggered by a neuropeptide called eclosion hormone.
Evidence that the ecdysteroids released during the commitment peak induce wandering behavior came from experiments in which the prothoracic glands, which secrete the steroids, were surgically removed prior to the commitment peak.

Ecdysis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ecdysis is the molting of the cuticula in arthropods and related groups (Ecdysozoa).
Often times this initial crack within the integumentary shell will be caused by an increase in blood pressure within the body (in combination with movement), forcing an expansion across its exoskeleton, leading to an eventual crack that allows for certain organisms such as spiders to extricate themselves from.
In preparation for ecdysis the arthropod will become inactive for a period of time, and then by crawling movements pushes forward in the old integument, which splits down the back allowing the animal to emerge.

 Notes: The Crayfish, T. H. Huxley, 1879
Unless the gatroliths are normally developed and re-absorbed, ecdysis is not healthily effected, and the crayfish dies in the course of the process.
There is a good deal of discrepancy hetween different observers as to the frequency of the process of ecdysis in crayfishes.
In fact, the gastroliths are very similar to other hard parts of the exoskeleton in structure, except that the densest layers are nearest the epithelial substratum, instead of furthest away from it.

There are various pseudocoelomate protostomes that are hard to classify because of their small size and reduced structure.
Traditionally the Arthropoda - the largest animal phylum including insects, spiders, crabs, and kin - and two small phyla closely related to it, the Onychophora and Tardigrada, have been considered close relatives of the Annelida on account of their common segmented body plan (the Articulata hypothesis).
This relationship is now in doubt, and it appears that instead they belong with various pseudocoeolomate worms - the Nematoda (roundworms), Nematomorpha (horsehair worms), Kinorhyncha, Loricifera, and Priapulida - which share with them ecdysis and several other characteristics.

All reptiles shed their skins, referred to as ecdysis, in a manner that differs from species to species.
Snakes shed or "slough" their skins in one piece, including eye caps, as opposed to lizards who look like they are recovering from a bad case of sunburn during a shed.
As a result, malnutrition and humidity that is too high or too low for your particular species, as well as the presence of mites or skin bacteria, trauma, and too much handling can all result in your snake not shedding properly.
