Topic: Cyanosis

 Cyanosis
Cyanosis may be caused by lung problems when not enough oxygen is getting into the bloodstream, or by circulatory problems.
When cyanosis is due to heart or lung disease, it often affects the face and the arms and legs.
All physiologic states of decreased peripheral blood flow may lead to cyanosis.

PetPlace.com - Article: Cyanosis in Cats
Peripheral cyanosis is due to desaturated hemoglobin that may be confined to a specific region of the body, for example, if a blood clot has obstructed blood flow to a particular body part or if a tourniquet has been applied.
If respiratory diseases are the cause of the cyanosis, various diagnostic tests such as thoracocentesis (removal of fluid or air from the chest cavity), a transtracheal wash, complete blood count, chemistry panel, urinalysis, chest X-rays, thoracic ultrasound, and fecal analysis may be warranted.
For example, if there is peripheral cyanosis due to obstruction of blood flow to one or two limbs, giving supplemental oxygen does not raise the amount of oxygen in the arterial blood, and does not resolve the cyanosis.

This tendency to cyanosis depends partly on the atelectasis present, but more especially on the feebleness of the respiratory muscles and, above all, on the lessened irritability of the nerve centers.
In this little patient, the fact was demonstrated that even with the best of care, infants of not more than 26 or 28 weeks' gestation and weighing less than 1200 grams, life will become extinct.
On the other hand, it must not be forgotten that the cooling of the skin is one of the most powerful stimulants to respiration (see Knapp, Scheintod der Neugeborenen, for a discussion of this subject).

eMedicine - Cyanosis : Article by Lawrence Martin, MD, FACP, FCCP
Pseudocyanosis is a bluish tinge to the skin and/or mucous membranes that is not associated with either hypoxemia or peripheral vasoconstriction.
MetHb imparts an intense bluish tinge to the skin; therefore, the cyanosis that comes with methemoglobinemia is not related to reduced hemoglobin but to oxidized hemoglobin.
When unaccompanied by hypoxemia, as determined by blood gas analysis, peripheral cyanosis is caused by peripheral vasoconstriction.
