Reproductive Biology and Endocrinology Abstract Microvascular endothelial cells of the corpus luteum
The potential clinical applications of research directed on corpus luteum endothelial cells are intriguing considering reproductive processes in which vascular dysfunctions may play a role such as ovarian failure, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS).
Available evidence indicates that microvascular endothelial cells of the corpus luteum are not alike, and may differ during the process of angiogenesis and angioregression.
The cyclic nature of the capillary bed in the corpus luteum offers a unique experimental model to examine the life cycle of endothelial cells, involving discrete physiologically regulated steps of angiogenesis, blood vessel maturation and blood vessel regression.

 Re: PGF and CL
If there is a difference in luteal function after PGF2a in some studies and not in other studies as suggested by Dr. Fields then I would hypothesize that this difference may be primarily due to the state of follicular development at the time of PGF2a.
If the corpus luteum is regressed with PGF (analog or not) the future ovulatory follicle may be at any stage of follicular development.
Thus, I would speculate that differences between studies or between animals may be due to the size or function of the follicle that is ovulated after a PGF2a injection.

In vivo responses of the primate corpus luteum to luteinizing hormone and chorionic gonadotropin.
Continuous infusions of hCG did not effect a pregnancy-like pattern of gonadotropin secretion, but the functional life span of the corpus luteun was extended in two of three animals.
To compare the responses of the corpus luteum to LH and human CG (hCG), cynomolgus monkeys whose endogenous gonadotropin secretion was blocked during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle with a gonadotropin-releasing hormone antagonist were i.v.
These results indicate that luteal regression at the termination of nonfertile menstrual cycles is caused by a large reduction in the responsiveness of the aging corpus luteum to LH, which can be overcome by elevated concentrations of either LH or CG.
