Eye - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Many complex organisms, including some mammals, birds, reptiles and fish, have two eyes which may be placed on the same plane to be interpreted as a single three-dimensional "image" (binocular vision), as in humans; or on different planes producing two separate "images" (monocular vision), such as in rabbits and chameleons.
Blinking the eyes is, of course, also a reflex.
Rapid eye movement typically refers to the stage during sleep during which the most vivid dreams occur.

EYE [eye] organ of vision and light perception.
In humans the eye is of the camera type, with an iris diaphragm and variable focusing, or accommodation.
Near the center of the visible portion of the eye, the choroid layer forms the ciliary body, which contains the muscles used to change the shape of the lens (that is, to focus).

Secondly, the cephalopod eye, like other invertebrate eyes, develops as an invagination, or in-pocketing, of the skin.
The secondary eyes are simple ocelli, which can sense movement and changes in light.
Individuals better at these "big three" are more likely to survive and pass on the traits that have helped in their success.

Compound eye - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The typical apposition eye has a lens focusing light from one direction on the rhabdom, while light from other directions is absorbed by the dark wall of the ommatidium.
The body of Ophiocoma wendtii, a type of brittle star, is covered with ommatidia, turning its whole skin into a compound eye.
The other kind of an apposition eye is found in Strepsiptera, in which each lens form an image, and the images are combined in the brain.

Compound eyes have unique ways of adapting to changing light.
This means that small eye facets have to be reproduced with very close tolerances for clear vision to occur.
One advantage of this type of compound eye is the ability to detect movement within a partial scene while using less brain processing time than that required to process the full image.

"When you have a pathway that's conserved, the argument that [eyes] evolved independently is much more tenuous," says Mardon.
Mardon further points out that eyeless clearly needs the proper environment to make an eye.
As eyes evolved in various organisms, this genetic cascade was adapted to the specific task of eye development.

 Insect Flight: Evolution
Every facet is bound by is own optic nerve to the insect's brain and contributes one spot of light to the image, much as the pixels (picture elements) in the monitor in front of you are doing now or tiles do in a mosaic.
Shapes are much more clearly defined on a 1024x768-pixel monitor than are equal size shapes on a 320x240-pixel monitor.
This means that an insect can assimilate changes in what it's seeing many times more quickly than we can.

The importance of these genes in eye development is underscored by the presence of functional orthologs in other seeing animals including mammals and the demonstration that several human retinal disorders such as Aniridia, bilateral anophthalmia, and congenital cataracts result from molecular lesions within the human homologs of these fly genes.
The compound eye of Drosophila melanogaster is a simple nervous system whose stereotyped development and near crystalline cellular architecture makes it an excellent experimental system for elucidating the mechanisms that govern tissue specification and patterning.
Loss-of-function mutations within members of the network leads to a drastic if not total reduction in eye development while ectopic expression of any individual member is sufficient to redirect the development of non-retinal tissues into an eye fate.

 Photoreceptors
As the name suggests, compound eyes are composed of many similar, closely-packed facets (called ommatidia) which are the structural and functional units of vision.
A pair of compound eyes are the principle visual organs of most insects; they are found in nearly all adults and in many immatures of ametabolous and hemimetabolous orders.
These simple eyes do not form an image or perceive objects in the environment, but they are sensitive to a wide range of wavelengths, react to the polarization of light, and respond quickly to changes in light intensity.

 Paper-Thin Compound-Eye Camera
An insect’s compound eye will never achieve a particularly high optical resolution, but the principle according to which it registers images does possess some advantages, and if these were incorporated in a camera it would be very flat and could cover a wide field of view.
It was precisely these advantages which inspired research scientists at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering IOF to develop their ultra-flat camera system.
Insect eyes show that this need not be the case: A camera chip based on the compound-eye principle can be used for person recognition and is as thin as paper.
