Topic: Cognition

Cognition - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term "cognition" is also used in a wider sense to mean the act of knowing or knowledge, and may be interpreted in a social or cultural sense to describe the emergent development of knowledge and concepts within a group that culminate in both thought and action.
Psychology (particularly cognitive psychology), cognitive science and psychophysics
The phenomenal success of the cognitive approach can be seen by its current dominance as the core model in contemporary psychology (usurping behaviorism in the late 1950s).

Embodied Cognition [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]
From this point of view, cognition depends on the kinds of experiences that come from having a body with particular perceptual and motor capacities that are inseparably linked and that together form the matrix within which memory, emotion, language, and all other aspects of life are meshed.
The general theory contends that cognitive processes develop when a tightly coupled system emerges from real-time, goal-directed interactions between organisms and their environment; the nature of these interactions influences the formation and further specifies the nature of the developing cognitive capacities.
Embodied cognition theorists view cognitivist/classicist accounts as problematic for many reasons, but they are especially concerned that these accounts result in an isolationist assumption that attempts to understand cognition by focusing almost exclusively on an organism's internal cognitive processes.

Educational Psychology Interactive: The Cognitive System
Cognition is central to the development of psychology as a scientific discipline.
Cognition can be defined as "the act or process of knowing in the broadest sense; specifically, an intellectual process by which knowledge is gained from perception or ideas" (Webster's Dictionary).
Jean Piaget's theory of cognitive development describes the process and stages by which human beings develop the capacity to engage in abstract symbolic thought, one of the distinguishing features of human activity.

MANY FACES: Chap. 6 Intelligence & Cognition
Work in this field cross-cuts cognitive psychology, biological psychology, developmental psychology, differential psychology, educational psychology, personality psychology, cultural psychology, industrial-organizational psychology, and perhaps other areas of psychology as well.
The issue of what intelligence is may seem remote from the concerns of cognitive psychology, in general, but nothing could be further from the case.
This kind of dialectic is by no means limited to intelligence, cognitive psychology, or even psychology.

Cognitive ethologists are typically willing to go much further than comparative psychologists by adopting folk-psychological terms to explain the behavior of nonhuman animals.
The theoretical terms of cognitive and folk-psychological approaches are intentional, in Brentano's sense.
Particularly important to his theory at this level is the role that learning plays in fixing the content of an internal state and in establishing and maintaining causal connections between internal states and behavior.

Examples of topics appropriate for the journal include emotional appraisals; effects of emotion or mood on cognition and motivation; the nature of emotional experience; self-regulation of emotion or mood; social, historical, or cultural aspects of emotion; and the nature of particular emotions or emotionality in general.
The journal aims to bring together work on emotion undertaken by researchers in cognitive, social, clinical, and developmental psychology, neuropsychology, and cognitive science; it also welcomes psychologically oriented submissions from those in philosophy, computer science, the humanities, anthropology, sociology, and other social sciences.

Funderstanding - Vygotsky and Social Cognition
Cognitive development results from a dialectical process whereby a child learns through problem-solving experiences shared with someone else, usually a parent or teacher but sometimes a sibling or peer.
The social cognition learning model asserts that culture is the prime determinant of individual development.
In short, according to the social cognition learning model, culture teaches children both what to think and how to think.

 Maturana (1970): Biology of Cognition
With the expansion of the cognitive domain during evolution, the types of behavior have changed as well as how their relevance is implemented; different kinds of behavior are relevant to the maintenance of the basic circularity of the living organization through different domains of interactions, and hence, different fields of causal relations.
Our cognitive process (the cognitive process of the observer) differs from the cognitive processes of other organisms only in the kinds of interactions into which we can enter, such as linguistic interactions, and not in the nature of the cognitive process itself.
To the extent that the part of its cognitive domain toward which the orientee is thus oriented is not genetically determined and becomes specified through interactions, one organism can in principle orient another to any part of its cognitive domain by means of arbitrary modes of conduct also specified through interactions.

A problem arises, however, when relationships are important to determining the outcome of a situation, since relationships have no look, feel, smell, etc. that would make them more salient and therefore have more attention paid to them in explanation.

In the 1920s, the German psychologist Otto Selz had one of the fundamental ideas of cognitive psychology, bound to influence Cognitive Science half a century later: to solve a problem entails to recognize that the situation represented by the problem is described by a known schema and fill the gaps in the schema.
A being with no consciousness, but with the same cognitive algorithm and the same cognitive structures (i.e., with the same cognitive architecture), would probably behave pretty much like us in pretty much all of our daily actions, without the emotions.

 Maturana (1978b): Cognition
If cognition is the effective operation of a living system in a medium, and if this effective operation is the result in each individual of a history of phylogenic and ontogenic structural coupling, the question of how cognition takes place is, in principle, answered.
If cognition is considered a human property and, as such, a given constituent of ourselves, and if we accept this as a starting point, whether explicitly or implicitly, then our attention necessarily turns to questions related to the use of cognition.
As observers we assert or evaluate cognition in a given domain through effective action or through successful behavior in that domain.

When ESC shifted the focus of intelligent behavior from representation-rich to self-organizing agents, and indeed from abstract intelligent behavior to simpler, physical living behavior, some posited that concepts such as information, representation, and symbols were superfluous to understand cognition, and that the language of dynamical systems theory would be sufficient.
Indeed, this approach blurred the conceptual distinction between Life and Cognition, between living and intelligent behavior.
