Cooperative education - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
She asserts that it is time for cooperative education to develop and define its body of knowledge, investigate its unique phenomena-e.g., the concept of learning from experience, and clarify and strengthen the qualifications of co-op practitioners.
Cooperative education is a structured method of combining academic education with practical work experience.
These principles assert that cooperative education fosters self-directed learning, reflective practice, and transformative learning; and integrates school and work learning experiences that are grounded in adult learning theories.

 Teaching Concepts: Cooperative Learning
Students who learn cooperatively tend to be more highly motivated to learn because of increased self-esteem, the proacademic attitudes of groupmates, appropriate attributions for success and failure, and greater on-task behavior.
The cooperative methods developed by the Johnsons are similar to those developed by Slavin, but with two exceptions: these methods place a greater emphasis on teaching students how to productively work together, and they recommend using team grades, rather than certificates or other forms of recognition, as positive reinforcers.
In the vast majority of studies, forms of cooperative learning have been shown to be more effective than noncooperative reward structures in raising the levels of variables that contribute to motivation, in raising achievement, and in producing positive social outcomes.

AND THEN THERE WERE SEVEN: Cooperative Principles Updated
If cooperatives are to be part of the solution to many of the world's problems, people must be not only aware of the concept, they must appreciate it and be willing to participate in it.
The new autonomy and independence principle emphasizes that cooperatives must be free of intervention from governments or other sources so that ultimately the members are able to control their own destiny.
Inevitably, the scope of problems being addressed and the extent of change throughout the world challenged some traditional cooperative assumptions, offered new interpretations of cooperative values and inspired a reconsideration of the role of cooperative enterprise in the 21st century.

 Coop Report
A major goal of cooperative learning is to help students expand their repertoire of problem-solving approaches, and a second goal is to help them develop collaborative skills - leadership, decision-making, communication, etc. These goals can only be achieved if students have enough time to develop a group dynamic, encountering and overcoming difficulties in working together.
Regardless of the objective specified, cooperative learning has repeatedly been shown to be more effective than the traditional individual/competitive approach to education.
There are many other proven benefits of cooperative learning that could be explained to the students, such as seeing alternative methods of approaching problems, being able to parcel out large assignments, improving social and communication skills, and gaining self-confidence.
