Topic: Cnidaria

 Cnidaria - Anemones
In the free-swimming medusa stage, such as jellyfish, the body shape is "umbrella-like" with a mouth at the base.
The two life stages of Cnidaria have similar simple body parts.
Can you think of reasons why one Cnidaria stage uses a sexual way of reproducing, while the other stage uses a non-sexual way of reproducing ?

 Systematics of Cnidaria
However, a recent cladistic analysis (Schuchert, 1993) and avaliable molecular data suggest that the Anthozoa - the only group of living cnidarians that completely lacks a medusoid "jellyfish" stage in the life cycle - are in fact most primitive.
Traditionally, it was thought that the Hydrozoa were the most primitive cnidarians.
This seems consistent with the fossil record of the Cnidaria, but further studies will be needed to refine this picture of cnidarian evolution.

The Anemones, Corals and Jellyfish (Phylum Cnidaria)
The Cnidaria come in two basic forms, a 'Polyp' form typified by the Sea Anemones and a 'Medusa' form typified by Jellyfish.
The word Cnidaria refers to Cnidocysts, specialised cells which contain the Nematocysts, the stinging organelles that allow the Cnidaria to subdue their prey.
The name Cnidaria has now pretty much replaced the older term of Coelenterata (pronounced selenterata) which these days is often applied to both the Cnidaria and the Ctenophora together, these two phyla are also known as the Radiate Animals because they both have radial or biradial symmetry.
http://www.earthlife.net/inverts/cnidaria.html   (1212 words)

 Coelenterata
Coelenterata was the original name for the phylum, and has been replaced by Cnidaria, to reflect a more restrictive grouping of these organisms, to exclude genetically unrelated organisms that may have coelenterons but not cnidae.
"Cnidaria" refers to the cnidae (threads) found in the stinging cells common to all members of the phylum, while "Coelenterata" refers the coelenteron (internal gut) common to all known members of the phylum.
Admin Note: You may also want to look into phylum Ctenophora [ten-off-or-ah] which contains the "comb jellies." These organisms resemble jellyfish but have a morphology distinct from true medusae.

Biology of Animals & Plants - Sponges & Cnidaria
In many ways, animals from the Phylum Cnidaria seem very similar to sponges: these animals also have an outside (ectoderm or epidermis) and inside (endoderm or gastrodermis) cellular layer with a jellyish layer with roaming replacement amebocytes in between, and many Cnidarians are sessile, with swimming sperm and sometimes swimming larvae.
Kind of a window into a small group of researchers of obscure animals.
When you also consider that just being stung can panic and disorient someone enough to cause them to drown, it's obvious that in many ways these can be dangerous beasties.

Cnidaria, Laboratory Notes for BIO 1003
The Cnidaria are clearly distinct from other animals because they have tentacles with stinging cells called cnidoblasts.
Many members of the Cnidaria have a two part life cycle that includes a sessile (attached) polyp that reproduces asexually and a swimming medusa that reproduces sexually; everything you see is diploid, except eggs and sperm.
Each cnidoblast has a surface trigger and contains a nematocyst that, when fired, harpoons or entangles the prey or attacker and poisons it.
