 Ethics @ Brandeis - CHYME
During the CHYME institute, the creation of digital stories provided opportunities for the participants to explore both their commonalties and their differences and to discuss aspects of the Middle East conflict in a mode both creative and personal.
Dialogue and oral history sessions, facilitated by Cynthia Cohen of Brandeis’ Slifka Program and Farhat Agbaria of Givat Haviva, allowed the participants to build relationships with each other, hear each other’s personal stories, and practice skills and methodologies that they could bring back home and teach to the youth with whom they work.
Digital stories draw on ethnographic, artistic, and journalistic tools to increase understanding of particular issues confronting individuals and communities.

 Gastrointestinal Physiology: Text
Chyme entering the small intestine initiates reflexes and hormonal mechanisms (1-5) which alter the activities of the small intestine, pancreas, gallbladder and stomach.
The intestinal phase begins when chyme enters the small intestine.
N.B. Division of the digestive process into these four phases is somewhat arbitrary since there is considerable temporal overlap among the phases.

Whatever I ate, it was without chyme, and it became the blood of the liver, that is, our grief.
The meaning is that in the illness of grief, I always dined on the heart's blood.
Another possibility: whatever I ate 'turned into' heart's blood-- and without the intervening stage of becoming 'chyme', which in the Greek-Islamic medical system was a kind of digestive fluid.

Only a teeny bit (around 5%) of all the gastric secretions are due to the intestinal phase.
Also, as material starts accumulating in the small intestines, the small intestines release CCK into the blood.
This is caused via gastrin released from the intestines, called intestinal gastrin.

Bicarbonate lessens the chyme’s acidity, thus allowing more enzymes to function and furthering the breakdown of macromolecules still present.
This way the food can be delivered into the intestine in a controlled manner.
The movement of chyme through the pyloric sphincter stimulates the intestine to release the hormones secretin and cholecystokinin, which signal the pancreas to release its contents, the pancreatic juice, inside the lumen (the lining) of the duodenum (the first segment of the small intestine).

Common symptoms indicating small intestine dysfunction include abdominal pain, pain between the shoulder blades or in the chest and/or shoulders, nausea, cramps, gas, diarrhea, loss of appetite or severe hunger, and weakness of abdominal muscles and quadriceps.
Normally chyme can remain in the small intestine 3-10 hours (irritants in our food and foods to which we are allergic can initiate a “peristaltic rush” which can empty the entire small intestine in a few minutes, leading to poor food absorption and often diarrhea).
The villi and microvilli increase the surface area of the small intestinal wall exposed to the chyme by 60,000%, making the small intestine extremely efficient in absorption of nutrients.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate wether faeces can be used instead of caecal chyme for the inoculation of different feedstuffs in vitro.
The use of faeces as inoculum requires that the microbial population in the faeces is comparable to the microbial population in the large intestine.

 The Digestive Process
Undigested chyme proceeds from the small intestine into the large intestine (colon), where it becomes concentrated, as liquid is absorbed in preparation for excretion.
The acidic environment of the stomach and the action of gastric enzymes convert the bolus into chyme, a liquefied mass that is squirted from the stomach into the small intestine.
Carbohydrates tend to leave the stomach rapidly and enter the small intestine; proteins leave the stomach less rapidly; and fats linger there the longest.

 chyme on Encyclopedia.com
The rhythmic muscular action of the stomach wall (peristalsis) moves the chyme into the duodenum, the first section of the small intestine, where it stimulates the release of secretin, a hormone that increases the flow of pancreatic juice as well as bile and intestinal juices.
Chyme also stimulates the release of cholecystokinin, a hormone that primarily increases the flow of bile but also increases the proportion of digestive enzymes in the pancreatic juice.
CHYME [chyme], semiliquid substance found in the stomach and resulting from the partial digestion of food by the salivary enzyme amylase, the gastric enzyme pepsin, and hydrochloric acid.

The muscles that normally propel chyme through the colon and out of the body are less and less able to do their job, increasing the risk of constipation and a host of other ills.
Without these nutrients, the immune system and other parts of the body weaken, leaving us open to numerous diseases.
If that was all that happened — chyme turning into hard and dry feces — we would only have to worry about constipation (from which millions of Americans suffer).
