Arthropod - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
These organisms have two body regions, ten jointed appendages, simple eyes, and often carry on respiration by means of book lungs.
There are five main subgroups: the Trilobita, Chelicerata, Myriapoda, Hexapoda, and Crustacea, which may be variously ranked from subphyla to classes, with various other taxa introduced above or below them and corresponding changes in the ranks of their subgroups.
The arthropod group identified with the subphylum Chelicerata is the class Arachnida.

The head and thorax are fused into a single cephalothorax bearing all 6 pairs of appendages.
The second pair of arachnid appendages are called pedipalps, variously modified for grasping, sperm transfer and sense perception.
The appendages of a single individual are referred to as serially homologous.

Chelicerates are characterized by a pair of chelate preoral appendages and a body divided into two tagmata, the prosoma and opisthosoma.
SYNZIPHOSURINES ARE basal members of the phylum Chelicerata, which includes xiphosurans (horseshoe crabs), eurypterids, chasmataspids, arachnids (e.g., spiders and scorpions) and possibly the pycnogonids (sea spiders) (Dunlop, 1999; Waloszek and Dunlop, 2002).

Fossil chelicerates and evolution of Chelicerata
Chelicerata can be seen to be set within a wider 'Arachnomorph' grouping, which includes Cambrian forms such as the aglaspids.
Future work may be expected to modify some of these relationships, and confirm or deny hypotheses such as a eurypterid ancestry for terrestrial scorpions.
Chasmataspids and eurypterids are now extinct, as are several other fossil groups which have been placed as 'sister taxa' to Chelicerata.

A CLADISTIC ANALYSIS OF TRILOBITOMORPHA TO CHELICERATA AND CRUSTACEA
The Trilobites, the Crustaceans, and the Chelicerates are all grouped in the phylum Arthropoda, which are believed to have evolved from annelid ancestors.
The Chelicerata, Crustacea, and Trilobitomorpha were analyzed cladistically in order to determine whether the Trilobites are more closely related to the Chelicerates or to the Crustaceans.
The results observed from the phylogram show that the Trilobitomorpha are more closely related to the Crustacea than the Chelicerata, which supports Margulis and Schwartz’s (1998) classification.

Subphylum Chelicerata (Spiders and their kin)
The Chelicerata, which I have called a subphylum here for convenience, but which is just as well called a phylum in some texts, is an extremely ancient group of arthropods, including the extinct Eurypterida.
The Chelicerata contain more about 80,000 species known to science most of which are Arachnids divided almost evenly between the spiders and the mites.
The inclusion of the class Pycnogonida in the Chelicerata is generally accepted but not scientifically proven, the fossil record for pycnogonids is very scant and they differ in many ways from the other chelicerates.

 Palaeos Invertebrates: Arthropoda: Arachnomorpha
According to Dunlop and Selden the Strabopida are the most primitive of the Arachnomorpha, and could have given rise to both chelicerates and aglaspidids.
As such, "Arachnomorpha" or "Arachnata" constitutes a broad taxon that includes the Trilobites, the Chelicerata and a number of primitive Cambrian to Devonian forms that are usually included in the Trilobitomorpha or the Xiphosura.
Hou & Bergström, 1997 use the Superclass Lamellipedia, which seems to be pretty much the same as Arachnomorpha (Trilobita + Chelicerata + assorted basal forms).

The Chelicerata can be defined as those arthropods with the anteriormost appendages as a pair of small pincers (chelicerae) followed usually by pedipalps and four pairs of walking legs, and with the body divided into two parts: the prosoma (corresponding approximately to the cephalothorax of many crustaceans) and the opisthosoma (or abdomen).
The Chelicerata comprise three classes: the enormous group Arachnida (spiders, ticks, mites, scorpions, and related forms); the Pycnogonida (sea spiders or nobody-crabs); and the Merostomata (including the extant Xiphosurida or horseshoe crabs).

Many species are thus responsible for either the formation of galls in plants or the transmission of disease in both plants and larger animals, in fact the Mites, particularly the Ticks transmit more diseases than any other comparable invertebrate group.
For example the Astigmata tend to go through all 6 stases but the prelarva and the deuteronymph are non-feeding, the deuteronymph being a dispersal stage with special adaptations for 'hitch-hiking (see below) in many species; while the Ticks (Ixodida) pass through only three stases.
Some Mites are unusual in that they can take in and digest solid food, (the only members of the Chelicerata which can) though most only feed on liquids i.e.

They replace older class level names such as Arachnida (now Chelicerata), Myriapoda, Onychophora and Insecta.
