Cerebellum - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The nonhuman analogue of the emboliform and globose nuclei is a single, fused nucleus interpositus (interposed nucleus).
The cerebellum arises from two rhombomeres located in the alar (dorsal, or upper) plate of the neural tube, a structure that eventually forms the brain and spinal cord.
Because of this 'updating' function of the cerebellum, lesions within it are not so debilitating as to cause paralysis, but rather present as feedback deficits resulting in disorders in fine movement, equilibrium, posture, and motor learning.

For example, the cerebellum is able to measure the forces that occur at the elbow in response to movement at the shoulder.
Damage to the cerebellum maybe a direct cause of tremor, or tremor may be the result of the child attempting to overcompensate for inaccurate movements.
The cerebellum is a large structure at the back of the brain, immediately behind the brainstem and below the occipital cortex.

CEREBELLUM [cerebellum], portion of the brain that coordinates movements of voluntary (skeletal) muscles.
Maintaining muscle tone is also a function of the cerebellum.
Injury to the cerebellum usually results in disruption of eye movements, balance, or muscle tone.

 Cerebellum: Subtle but Central
Except for the last (muscle, et al), the cerebellum is not thought the heart of -- that is, central to -- much else.
For the cerebellum gets others -- e.g., the muscle; the cerebral cortex; the hypothalamus; the hippocampus; the heart; the lungs -- to do the brute work.
Since each of these points inherently arises in the more particular papers which accompany this note, further and more particular comment on the cerebellum's subtle centrality will be left for those papers.

The Cerebellum: The Treasure at the Bottom of the Brain, by Henrietta Leiner and Alan Leiner
But during the past decade a broader view of its function has emerged as a result of new research, and now the cerebellum is regarded as a structure that can help not only motor but also nonmotor regions to do their work effectively.
Although many of these theories are considered controversial at present, it seems possible that each of them may be at least partially correct and that the present controversies can therefore be reconciled in the future.
Formerly this structure was thought to have only a motor function, which it performed by helping other motor regions of the brain to do their work effectively.

The cerebellum is the largest part of the motor system and works with the cerebrum, spinal cord and other structures, to regulate the rate, range, and force of movements(Mallonee 13).
The first structures in the motor hierarchy are the spinal cord and the cerebellum.
The cerebellum specifically controls elementary reflexes, posture and locomotion, and voluntary movements(Ito 353).

 Basal Ganglia and Cerebellum
The cerebellum ("little brain") has convolutions similar to those of cerebral cortex, only the folds are much smaller.
A simple way to look at its purpose is that it compares what you thought you were going to do (according to motor cortex) with what is actually happening down in the limbs (according to proprioceptive feedback), and corrects the movement if there is a problem.
The fibers coming down from cerebral cortex, however, DO need to cross (remember the cerebrum is concerned with the opposite side of the body, unlike the cerebellum).
