 CARDIAC ELECTROPHYSIOLOGY
Following the electrophysiology study, one has to lay flat between four to six hours, and patients either will be admitted for further therapy with medications, or ablation, or may be discharged at that time, depending upon the results of the test.
An automatic defibrillator is a device which is implanted in the patient's upper chest and has an electrode wire which is inserted through the vein into the chamber of the right ventricle, and this delivers an electrical shock to restore a patient's heart rhythm during cardiac arrest.
They will be sedated mildly with a sedative and catheters will be introduced under sterile preparation into the veins in the groin area and sometimes the neck or the upper chest area.

Certification Policies for Added Qualifications in Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology
The clinical cardiac electrophysiology training must be conducted in a program that is accredited for training in cardiovascular disease by the ACGME.
Clinical cardiac electrophysiology training taken July 1, 1998 and thereafter must be accredited by the ACGME.
Candidates who were previously admitted to the examination through the practice pathway and have not yet achieved certification will continue to be admitted to future clinical cardiac electrophysiology examinations.

A biased history of the physics of Neuro- and Cardiac Electrophysiology
This is not a review article, but rather how I see the world of cardiac electrophysiology and arrhythmogenesis and how work that Gus and I do at the single channel level can translate into mechanisms for triggering and sustaining complex reentrant cardiac arrhythmias.
Although this work was done during the early part of this century, the basic ideas expressed with respect to initiation of a reentrant arrhythmia (a pattern of excitation that circulates around either a structural or functional obstacle) are still accepted today.
These critical dimensions, first appreciated by Fozzard with respect to cardiac electrophysiology, are essential for understanding the genesis of reentrant cardiac arrhythmias.

eMedicine - Programmed Electrical Stimulation : Article by Hongsheng Guo, MD
PES is an essential tool to assess the efficacy of electrophysiological therapy, including drug therapy, device therapy (eg, pacemaker, ICD, biventricular pacing device), and curative therapy with catheter ablation or surgery.
The clinical significance of EPS results in these patients is 3-fold and consists of (1) understanding the mechanism of arrhythmia, (2) determining the need for and type of therapy, and (3) assessing the efficacy of therapy.
Less frequently, PES is used to assess the efficacy of antiarrhythmic drug therapy in patients at high risk for ventricular arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death.

Cardiotext.com Profiles in Cardiac Pacing and Electrophysiology Berndt Luederitz
Clearly, many aspects of the history of a developing field represent moving targets, especially as related to the dynamic, explosive field of cardiac electrophysiology, and there is a lot happening as one uncovers past and present events.
Nonetheless, cardiac electrophysiology today is a fairly well-defined discipline because of the creativity, dedication and hard work of the folks covered in this text.
Most prior medical/ historical communications have given minimal attention to the area of cardiac arrhythmia, and in this regard, the book serves a unique purpose in addressing the discipline of cardiac electrophysiology.

Lastly for those patients with rapid heartbeats, electrophysiology testing after identifying the cause of the arrhythmia can sometimes be used to cure the patient of this arrhythmia through a specific procedure called radio frequency ablation.
In those patients who have a question as to why they suffered a specific symptom, electrophysiology testing often identifies those causes most readily.

Cardiac electrophysiology - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cardiac electrophysiology is the science of the electrical conduction system of the heart.
It is concerned with the normal and abnormal transmission of impulses from the cardiac pacemaker and its influence on contraction of the myocardium (the muscle of the heart).
A specialist in cardiac electrophysiology is known as a cardiac electrophysiologist, or (more commonly) simply an electrophysiologist.

Review of seven cardiac electrophysiology stimulators
Seven cardiac electrophysiology stimulators from four manufacturers (Biotronik, Bloom, Digitimer and Medtronic) in common current use are reviewed.
All of the stimulators fulfil, or are close to fulfilling, basic electrophysiological requirements, but some provide more complex facilities such as would be required by specialist centres.
In addition, a summary of stimulator user comments from a number of electrophysiology centres is presented.
