 IMM Reports No. 25
This paper summarizes the results of a recently completed scaling study of artificial mechanical phagocytes of microscopic size, called "microbivores." Microbivores constitute a potentially large class of medical nanorobots intended to be deployed in human patients for a wide variety of antimicrobial therapeutic purposes, for example as a first-line response to septicemia.
The analysis focuses on a relatively simple device: an intravenous (I.V.) microbivore whose primary function is to destroy microbiological pathogens found in the human bloodstream, using the "digest and discharge" protocol first described by the author elsewhere [1].
Thus microbivores appear to be up to ~1000 times faster-acting than either unaided natural or antibiotic-assisted biological phagocytic defenses.

Guidance for Industry: Catheter-Related Bloodstream Infections - Developing Antimicrobial Drugs for Treatment
However, with coagulase-negative staphylococci, especially if the focus of infection is a peripheral intravenous catheter, the importance of antimicrobial therapy relative to catheter removal is less clear.
On the one hand, given the controversy as to whether antimicrobial therapy is needed in certain situations, the criteria are strict enough so that only patients who unequivocally require antimicrobial therapy would be enrolled.
Data should be submitted demonstrating that the pathogens to be studied are susceptible in vitro to the study drug, including information from animal models.

Alcohol And Pregnancy Don't Mix, HYG-5534-93
If you are pregnant, the alcohol in your bloodstream passes through the placenta to the baby so that when you have a drink, the baby has one equal in strength.
Because of the baby's size and its developing system, this "drink" of alcohol can be more harmful to the baby than to you.
But we don't know yet if alcohol consumed by the father might affect the condition of the sperm and then affect cell division and growth after conception.

 INTRODUCTION
Data regarding the incidence, etiology and outcome of bloodstream infections taken on a broad European basis is scarce, as is information concerning this issue in many countries not yet belonging to the European Union (EU).
Bacteremia can occur in patients of any age group, but the classic pattern involves two large peaks of incidence.
Data regarding the incidence, etiology and outcome of bloodstream infections taken on a broad European basis is scarce.

 Amazon.ca: Books: Bloodstream
Anyone who has spent any time in Maine will quickly realize that the mispronunciation of Bangor is only one of the many ways that Bloodstream fails to accurately capture the essence of Maine.
Combine that with the convoluted, highly unbelievable plot and subsequent resolution, and the unrealistic characters (Amelia, the 14-year-old girl from a dysfunctional family thinks and behaves like a well-adjusted adult) and this is one book I hope readers will skip.
BLOODSTREAM is a fast and fun five star read that will have you deeply involved in the mystery while you work along with Claire as she tries to figure it all out.

Brain Metastases - Symptoms, Treatment and Prevention
Each kind of cancer may have a typical route of spread.
Whether metastases do develop depends on the complex interaction of many tumor cell factors, most of which are not completely understood.
Metastases spread in three ways - by local extension from the tumor to the surrounding tissues; through the bloodstream to distant sites; or through the lymphatic system to neighboring or distant lymph nodes.

News - Simple Interventions Nearly Eliminate Catheter-Related Bloodstream Infections
The simple interventions, which include a system for educating nurses and doctors about infection control, streamlining the catheter insertion process, and a safety checklist, are believed to have prevented over 40 infections, eight deaths and saved nearly $2 million in additional health care costs during the four-year study at Johns Hopkins, says Berenholtz.
Patients in ICUs have an increased risk of bloodstream infections because nearly half of them require catheters - tubular medical devices usually inserted into a blood vessel -- for delivering fluids and medications during treatment, according to Berenholtz.
The ICU researchers partnered with hospital epidemiologists to study catheter-related infection rates from 1998 through 2002 at two Johns Hopkins ICUs that care for adult patients undergoing general, cardiac, transplant, trauma, vascular and orthopedic surgery.
