Topic: Blood letting

Bloodletting - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The blood to be let was of a specific nature determined by the disease: either arterial or venous, and distant or close to the area of the body affected.
The term "phlebotomy" is still sometimes used for the taking of blood for laboratory analysis or blood transfusion (see Phlebotomy (modern)).
In Greece, bloodletting was in use around the time of Hippocrates, who mentions bloodletting but in general relied on dietary techniques.

 BLOOD-LETTING - LoveToKnow Article on BLOOD-LETTING
Venesection, in which the blood is usually withdrawn from the median-basilic vein of the arm, has the disadvantage that it can only be performed by the medical man, and that the patients friends are generally very much opposed to the idea.
This is a condition frequently met with in the early stages of acute pneumonia, pleurisy and bronchitis, when the obstruction is in the lungs, the heart being normal.
There are certain morbid conditions when a patient may obtain marked relief from the abstraction of a certain amount of blood, from three or four ounces up to twenty or even thirty in extreme cases.

The use of the lance needle to treat the blood channels is a reference to blood-letting.

Yet, in a clinical study conducted in Beijing with patients carefully monitored for responses to acupuncture therapy for hypertension, blood-letting was not a technique employed (10).

This was done at the commencement of an acute fever, where the patient was of a plethoric habit, and the blood in a state of great commotion.
If, for instance, the object be to take away blood so rapidly as to make a great and sudden impression on the system, with the view of producing actual syncope or fainting, for any particular purpose, venesection is the most sure and effectual means we possess of so doing.
It acts powerfully as a counter-irritant; as is proved by the pain attending the operation, and by the increase of action it excites in the vessels of the part, and to some distance around.

At the end of treatment, complete virologic response, or total loss of HCV RNA in the blood, was achieved in 55 percent of the patients (22/40) who received the combination regimen compared to only about 17 percent of the patients who received only interferon (seven of 42).
