Beta-lactamase - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The structure of a Streptomyces β lactamase is given by PDB 1BSG.
These antibiotics have a common element in their molecular structure, a four-atom ring known as a beta-lactam.
The lactamase enzyme breaks that ring open, deactivating the molecule's properties.

beta - definition of beta in Computer
Beta versions of non-commercial software are more often freely available to anyone who has an interest.
Beta: A beta version of something is not yet ready for prime time but still possibly useful to related developers and other interested parties.
Traditionally beta versions (of commercial software) are distributed only to selected testers who are often then given a discount on the proper version after its release in exchange for their testing work.

The term Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) refers to beta lactamase enzymes produced mainly by Klebsiella sp and E. coli that confer resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics
Moreover, detection of organisms with multiple-lactamases that may interfere with the phenotypic confirmatory test can only be accomplished using isoelectric focusing and DNA sequencing
Some organisms with ESBLs contain other lactamases that can mask ESBL production in the phenotypic test, resulting in a false-negative test.

Resistance to penicillin is due to inactivation of antibiotic by beta-lactamase, alteration in target PBPs, and permeability barrier preventing penetration of antibiotic to target.
When the beta-lactam antibiotic binds to the PBPs, transpeptidation is inhibited, peptidoglycan synthesis is blocked, and the cell dies.
This process occurs as an adaptive mechanism that arises in response to antibiotics.
