 Beta-Carotene
One researcher has suggested that taking beta-carotene supplements depletes the body of these other beneficial carotenes, and thereby causes a harmful effect.
A randomized, 12-year primary-prevention trial of beta carotene supplementation for nonmelanoma skin cancer in the physicians' health study.
The situation with beta-carotene and heart disease is rather similar to that of beta-carotene and cancer.

This same study also found a 10% increase in heart disease and a 20% increase in strokes among the beta-carotene users.
Unfortunately, intervention studies that have looked at purified beta-carotene supplements (not mixed carotenoids) have not cleared up any of the confusion.
These results were so alarming that the National Cancer Institute decided to halt the $40 million study nearly 2 years early.

 Beta Carotene
I am not aware of any other manufacturer to date that has produced such a quality beta carotene product with the naturally accompanying carotenoids that has clinically tested their product to such an extent.
Also, study after study indicated that there was a relationship between low beta carotene levels and some forms of cancer, heart disease and other chronic degenerative diseases.
Beta carotene is a pro-vitamin A—being converted to Vitamin A as needed by the body.

 Beta Carotene
There's also a delicate balance between free radicals and antioxidants in the body.
There was good research—mostly involving beta carotene from the diet—suggesting that this vitamin-like substance could lower the risk of cancer and possibly other diseases.
Since then, scientists have been trying to explain what went wrong with beta carotene, and recently some interesting theories have emerged.

 Beta-carotene
Beta carotene is a natural antioxidant which helps to protect the body from disease.
Beta carotene can also help to strengthen the immune system, increase lung capacity, reduce the skin’s risk to sun and DNA damage as well as reduce cholesterol levels.
High doses of beta carotene over periods of time may cause nausea, loose stools, bruising, joint pain, and a yellow/ orange coloring on hands and feet.

 beta-carotene
In addition to the numerous studies on beta-carotene's effectiveness for heart disease and cancer, researchers have been exploring the nutrient's potential for treating chronic fatigue syndrome, Alzheimer's disease, fibromyalgia, male infertility, and psoriasis.
Look for products that combine beta-carotene with other carotenes such as alpha-carotene, lycopene, lutein, zeaxanthin, and cryptoxanthin.
Until more information is available, it's probably wise to get beta-carotene in supplement form only as part of a mixed complex, along with other health-promoting carotenoids.

 Go Ask Alice!: Beta-carotene
A few large studies have recently been published stating that beta- carotene is not effective in reducing lung cancer.
Although this study was not completed, researchers found 28% more lung cancer in those taking the beta- carotene - Vitamin A combination.
In a third study, the Physicians' Health Study at Harvard, 22,000 male physicians were given beta- carotene for 12 years.

Colestipol, a cholesterol-lowering medication similar to cholestyramin, may also reduce beta-carotene levels.
In addition to these medications, mineral oil (used to treat constipation) may lower blood concentrations of beta-carotene and ongoing use of alcohol may interact with beta-carotene, increasing the likelihood of liver damage.
