Benign fasciculation syndrome - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Some degree of control of the fasciculations may be achieved with the same drugs used to treat essential tremor -- beta-blockers and anti-seizure drugs.
In addition to twitching, patients with BFS often experience pain, paraesthesia, generalized fatigue, exercise intolerance, globus sensation and/or muscle cramping.
However, often the most effective approach to treatment is to treat any accompanying anxiety.

 Benign Cramp Fasciculation Syndrome
The reverence borne to these principles is so great, and their authority so paramount to all other, that the testimony, Benign not only of other men, but the evidence of our own Benign syndrome senses are often rejected, when they offer to vouch anything contrary to these established rules.
How much the doctrine Syndrome of innate principles, and that principles are not to be proved or questioned, has contributed to this, I will not here examine.
The first and firmest ground of probability is the conformity anything has to our own knowledge; especially that part of our knowledge which we have embraced, and continue to look on as principles.

 EMG & Nerve Conductions EMG F.A.Q : ALS - Page 2
The nerve conduction study (NCS) is normal, while the Cramp/fasciculation syndrome may have muscle aching, cramps, stiffness, and exercise intolerance.
Or, maybe they mean the clinical way: that the patient gets them more, feels more fasciculations in a given muscle -the frequency of each such "battery" of fasciculations is higher.
An EMG however would be a very good idea because it may explore whether or not you have fasciculations (that you are not aware of) in other muscles.

 Question about CPK
I have fasciculations all the time, mostly when I'm in positions that put tension on my spinal cord (like sitting).
I would greatly appreciate any thoughts you may have on what could be causing this and what would be best to do next.
My major symptoms are muscle soreness in my thighs and shoulders, cracking joints all over my body, exercise intolerance/fatigue, and minor cramping in my feet.

ALS Talk Topic: twitching but not ALS??
And, I have learned that fasciculations (these random muscle twitches) are usually indicative of some pretty nasty neuromuscular diseases.
In reality, benign, in this particular instance, simply means not ALS or some other muscle robbing disease.

Also, there are specific changes other than fascics we look for on EMG that point to a motor neuron disease like ALS.

Further research has led me to articles on "Benign Fasciculation 'syndrome'" and "fasciculations and anxiety" and other such obscurely meaty speculations regarding the cause and consequence of those tiny twitches.
Fasciculations are those annoying little muscle twitches most of us sometimes get.
All said, I've learned that there is some likelihood that my current symptoms are caused by a viral infection (such as un-symptomatic herpes) leading a sort of autoimmune systemic reaction which has been exacerbated by the stress and anxiety in my life.

Delayed muscular relaxation after contraction or following percussion of a muscle is the most prominent feature of myotonia, a diagnosis that can be confirmed electromyographically (see Section 24 23), but in hypothyroidism both muscular contraction and relaxation are slowed and the time-course of the tendon reflexes is slower than normal.

 Cramp-Fasciculation? A case study.
Benign Fasciculation Syndrome (BFS) is a neuromuscular disorder characterized by hyperexcitability of the motor neurons (nerves that control movement).
Since the cause is unknown, treatment of the disorder is limited the therapies to provide symptomatic relief.
There is no cure for this syndrome, although patients seem to improve with time.

PS: fasciculations are very different from spasms--spasms are the contraction/relaxation of muscle groups (charlie horse)--fasciculations (twitches) are the misfiring of individual muscle fibers/bundles--spasms can be the result of electrolyte imbalances--fasciculations are the result of a breakdown/disturbance in the signaling process.

This is a disease "of unknown etiology" (meaning the experts haven't a clue what causes it) that appears to strike maybe one person in 200 (ie, it's one of the most common neuro disorders).
You probably have a mild case of "benign fasciculation syndrome" (BFS).
If one of those doesn't solve your problem, at least it's an inexpensive and safe thing to do.
