Topic: Behaviorist

Behaviorism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Watson's behaviorist manifesto persuaded most academic researchers in experimental psychology of the importance of studying behavior.
This was a substantial break from the structuralist psychology of the time, which used the method of introspection and considered the study of behavior valueless.
Some behaviorists argue simply that the observation of behavior is the best or most convenient way of investigating psychological and mental processes.

 Behaviorist v Trainer
Once the behaviorist has assessed the family and the dog enough to understand the etiology of the behavior (or the most likely etiology) the family is educated on the best method(s) to alter their dog’s behavior.
A behaviorist is much more likely to have a single dog (or multiple dogs in a multiple dog family) and a problem or goal from which he or she creates an individual plan of behavior modification.
Behaviorists look backwards to determine the etiology of the behavior in order to determine which method of modification is best, or to decide, in some cases, that the behavior cannot be sufficiently modified to satisfy the owners and be safe.

 Behaviorist Perspective
Behaviorist approaches are different from most other perspectives because they view people as controlled by their environment and specifically that we are the result of what we have learned from our environment.
Skinner believed that all of our behavior is the result of punishment and reward; this theory forms the principles of operant conditioning that he proposed.
Watson's theories are often described as extreme behaviorism as he felt that psychologists should only study behavior and not any other processes such as consciousness or feelings because these are not compatible with objective scientific experimentation.

 Behaviorism [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]
The scientific nub of the approach is a concept of operant conditioning indebted to Thorndike's "Law of Effect." Operants (e.g., bar-presses or key-pecks) are units of behavior an organism (e.g., a rat or pigeon) occasionally emits "spontaneously" prior to conditioning.
In the same vein as John Searle still complains "the behaviorist seems to leave out the mental phenomena in question," (Searle 1992: 34), E. Titchener complained, at the movement's outset, of behaviorism's "irrelevance to psychology as psychology is ordinarily understood" (Titchener 1914: 6).
Wundt is often called "the father of experimental psychology." He conceived the subject matter of psychology to be "experience in its relations to the subject" (Wundt 1897: 3).

The Difference Between and Behaviorist and a Trainer k9aggression.com
Behaviorists should have academic credentials in the science of animal behavior, as well as hands on experience.
Typically, the focus is on the overall behavior of the dog.
Its is impotant to make a distinction between the two, because while behaviorism, as an ideal has been rejected by modern psychologists, there are many in the dog world who still hold fast to these ideas.

 Behaviorist versus Cognitivist
Bandura’s theory is problematic as a behaviorist because it shares many aspects with the cognitivists while emphasizing behavior modeling.
In contrast to the behaviorist theories, the cognitivist theories are directly concerned with how we learn and with what goes on inside the mind.
Habits originate from stimulus and response and learning is a "conditioning of habits." As with most behaviorists, this theory sought to satisfy the need to measure learning.

 Behaviorism
Behaviorist creatures may engage in pain behavior, including beneath the skin pain responses, yet completely lack whatever is qualitatively distinctive of and proper to pain (its painfulness).
This functionalist notion is similiar to the behaviorist idea that reference to behavior and to stimulus/response relations enters centrally and essentially into any account of what it means for a creature to behave or to be subject, in the scheme of analytical behaviorism, to the attribution of mental states.
Psychological behaviorists regard the practice of talking about one's own states of mind, and of introspectively reporting those states, as potentially useful data in psychological experiments, but as not presupposing the metaphysical subjectivity or non-physical presence of those states.

 Behaviorist Theory
So, the first basic characteristic of behaviorism is that behaviorists emphasize the importance of empirical, observable behaviors.
According to "radical behaviorists" like Watson, what determines the intelligence, temperament, and other personality characteristics of a child, is the environment in which the child is raised.
A second fundamental characteristic of behaviorists, not unrelated to the first, is that they view the external environment as the principal (maybe the only) determinant factor in behavior.

A Science Odyssey: People and Discoveries: Watson launches behaviorist school of psychology
He took the notion of conditioned reflexes developed by Ivan Pavlov and applied it to the study of behavior.
In the 1950s and 1960s, B.F. Skinner pursued behaviorism with the view of improving the human condition, for example, and others since have applied behaviorism as a tool in an array of psychological approaches.
Watson first presented his ideas at psychological meetings between 1908 and 1912, and by 1912 was using the term "behaviorist." The following year he published an article, "Psychology as the Behaviorist Views It," that introduced this distinct new branch of psychology.

An Investigation of Behaviorist and Cognitive Approaches to Instructional Multimedia Design
The essential difference in ID is that behaviorist approaches rely of the notion that human behavior is predictable, but cognitive approaches consider the role of unobservable mental states and introspection, which are part of human behavior (Winn and Snyder, 1996).
Early computer-based materials are seen to be influenced by behaviorist concepts while discovery learning materials are felt to be founded on later cognitive models of information processing and constructivism.
Unlike a behaviorist approach, the cognitive approach suggests learners should be given control.

 Behaviorist theories of learning
Behaviorist theories of learning seek scientific, demonstrable explanations for simple behaviors.
Eventually, however, educators began to feel that although stimulus-response does explain many human behaviors and has a legitimate place in instruction, behaviorism alone was not sufficient to explain all the phenomena observed in learning situations.

The successful behaviorist must demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the literature and scientific principles of animal behavior, and original interpretations of animal behavior information.
The training methods and tools that the majority of Applied Animal Behaviorist are using and prescribing to their clients, are based upon "Total Positive Reinforcement" training method, popularized by Karen Pryor in late 1980's.

Classics in the History of Psychology -- Titchener (1914)
On the negative side, again, psychology is enjoined by the behaviorist to ignore, even if it does not deny, those modes of human experience with which ordinary psychology is concerned, and in particular to reject the psychological method of introspection.
The erection of this special science is both justified and made possible by the practical goal of behaviorism, which is the working out of general and special methods for the control of behavior, the regulation and control of evolution as a whole.[7]
That is, evidently, not the case; these processes are, in Watson's thought, both mental and physical; not only are brain-changes to be transformed into their equivalent peripheral changes, but the facts of psychology (as psychology is currently taken) are also to be carried, by way of behavioristic substitution, to the bodily periphery.

The Language of Animal Learning Theories
The traditional reply of the molar behaviorist to the above criticism is that all of behavior is ultimately understandable in terms of changing rates of responding across all behaviors.
The molar behaviorist takes the normal distal description of an act, like a rat's pressing a lever or a pigeon's pecking a key, as both the basic unit of empirical measurement and as the basic unit of theoretical analysis.
However, Harré (1982) not a behaviorist, uses the term behaviour to mean mere bodily moment.

The cognitivist perspective offers the same ability to learn skills, concepts and facts as that presented by the behaviorist perspective, but goes further in fostering the development of an understanding of various learning strategies (germane to a particular subject field) which in turn encourages the student to construct their own knowledge of the subject.

What distinguishes behaviorists (and pop-behaviorists, who identify themselves not as Skinnerians but as "performance management" experts and suchlike) is not a predilection for using rewards so much as a tendency to focus on behavior -- as though only that which can be seen and measured is real.
The more reasonable view, I would argue, is that our behavior is just the outward manifestation of who we are: our thoughts and feelings, expectations and memories.
The cost of rewards -- and one of half a dozen compelling explanations for why performance isn't enhanced by their use -- has to do with their effect on interest in the work itself.

Merleau-Ponty rejected both associationist psychology, focused on correlations between sensation and stimulus, and intellectualist psychology, focused on rational construction of the world in the mind.
