 Behavioral Ecology Syllabus
Behavioral ecology is the study of the adaptiveness of behavior.
Potential projects include analysis of bird behavior in the wild, analysis of human behavior, or computer simulation of behavior.
Students in the course will become familiar with experimental approaches and techniques, as applied to the study of behavior.

 Significance of Animal Behavior Research
Many of the world's leading conservationists have a background in animal behavior or behavioral ecology.
Animal behavior researchers look at the behavior and well-being of animals in lab and field.

 animal behavior careers
Educators may have a B.S. or B.A. degree, an M.S or M.A., or a Ph.D. in the behavioral or biological sciences.
However, psychologists and ethologists are primarily concerned with the regulation and functions of behavior, while behavioral ecologists focus on how behavioral patterns relate to social and environmental conditions.
Director of Research: Requires a Ph.D., typically in the biological or behavioral sciences.

 Society for Behavioral Neuroendocrinology
One's research need not explicitly employ behavioral techniques as long as the research is relevant to behavior.
Under Dr. Baum's editorship, Hormones and Behavior has become a premiere journal in neuroscience and Behavior.
Similarly, behavioral research need not employ neuroendocrine techniques, but only be related to neuroendocrine function.

Encyclopedia article on Behavioral ecology [EncycloZine]
Before about 1980, behavioral ecology and sociobiology were more or less synonyms.
However, attempts to apply theories of the evolution of animal behavior to human beings became very controversial.
Behavioral ecology (US spelling) or behavioural ecology (UK spelling) is the study of the ecological and evolutionary basis for animal behavior, and the roles of behavior in enabling animals to adapt to their ecological niches.

 Behavioral Ecology Summer Field Course
It calls for you to be extraordinarily active and creatively engaged - the best way for you to develop and synergistically fuse conceptual, analytical, and practical behavioral ecology skills.
Rather, it is a course in which attempts to do meaningful behavioral research is our first priority.
One on one and group discussion of the essay topics exercises our analytical muscles and help individuals with idiosyncratic problems they have applying evolutionary theory to the adaptationist analysis of animal and human behavior.

 Behavioural Ecology Research Group
Behavioural ecology is the study of the relationships between an organism's behaviour and the environment in which that behaviour has evolved or is expressed.
Evolutionary physiology is also an area of current interest, since physiological traits, or any other behavioural mechanism, can be viewed from the same theoretical perspective.

Male gobies work harder for females - (United Press International)
The experiments were reported in the current issue of the journal of Behavioral Ecology.
"We were interested in whether males would change their behavior in response to the perception that their future mating opportunities were different.
All male gobies nibbled on the eggs they were taking care of, and unaccompanied males also were more likely to gobble down entire clutches of eggs.

The major focus of my research is the behavioral ecology of spiders, whose small size, short life span, and behavioral diversity make them excellent model systems for intensive study.
I am interested in the selective forces shaping the evolution of social behavior, and use both field-based observational studies and laboratory experimentation.
This project examines the ecology, behavior and genetic structure of populations of colonial orb-weaving spiders from tropical Mexico and coastal California.

IHT: Making a match in a dark realm
But the studies, some recently published in Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology, are not merely investigations of cave curiosities.
"It was a surprise," said Martin Plath, a graduate student who has carried out the work with fellow behavioral biologists at Hamburg, Jakob Parzefall, Kay Koerner and Ingo Schlupp.
Researchers say the question is how animals adapt to major environmental change: the switch to cave living serving as a proxy for any number of changes, like warming environment or deteriorating habitat.

The RACE Fisheries Behavioral Ecology Program
The Fisheries Behavioral Ecology Program, based at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, Oregon, conducts research aimed at understanding the relationships between fish behavior and environmental variables (physical and biological), and how this influences distribution, survival, and recruitment of economically important fish species.
Traditional fishing methods, scientific surveys, population modeling, and fishery management strategies are all dependent upon a fundamental understanding of fish behavior.
Program research also includes experimental analysis of fishing gear performance, and the survival and recovery of fishes from stresses imposed during fishing activity.

We are using this 'virtual ecology' strategy to study the cumulative effects of choices by insect pollinators on flower morphology.
Evolutionary change can then be studied over a manageable timescale (generations are compressed into days) and dynamic interactions can be characterised in detail, with complete control over parameters such as characteristics of the ancestral population and mutation rate.
Bees drive a simulated evolutionary process in which mutations occur and only the most popular flower leaves descendants.
