 UNODC - Bulletin on Narcotics - 1959 Issue 3 - 004
One is that eighteen of the patients were given barbiturates or other narcotic drugs in the ward, another that some of the patients are transferred to the psychiatric wards relatively soon after their admission.
The experience of psychiatric clinical wards in Norway suggests that 75% of the drug addicts are using barbiturates.
It is characteristic of this type of patient that under an acute emotional reaction in a personal relationship situation he has recourse to the medicine which is accessibleas an alternative to other outlets for anger and irritation, as Wiingaard ([ 3]) has asserted.

 Barbiturate-Induced Coma AHealthyMe.com
Before coma is induced, intracranial hypertension may be treated by hyperventilation; by facilitation of blood flow from the brain; by decompressive surgical procedures, such as draining excess fluids from under the skull or from the chambers within the brain (ventricles); or by drug therapy, including osmotherapy, diuretic agents, or steroids.
Barbiturate-induced comas are used when conventional therapy to reduce intracranial hypertension has failed.
One of the greatest hazards associated with brain injury is intracranial hypertension.

 UNODC - Bulletin on Narcotics - 1962 Issue 2 - 003
Barbiturate consumption increased greatly after the introduction of the N.H.S. in 1948, from 45,000 lb sold in the home market in that year to 90,000 lb in 1951 (Hunter, 1957).
Incidentally, three out of four doctors in general practice among the twenty-four questioned stated that the introduction of tranquillizers and non-barbiturate hypnotics had made little or no difference to barbiturate prescription in their practice, but the sample is clearly much too small to draw any conclusions.
Thus the amount prescribed in 1959 (162,000 lb, or 73,000 kg) was almost twice as high as the 1951 figure (90,000 lb, or 41,000 kg).

NADD - National Association for the Dually Diagnosed
Barbiturate AED and psychopharmacologic drug changes were gradual, data analysis took into account the time to reach drug steady-state levels, and analysis eliminated phenytoin as the cause of behavior problems (Cases 6-10).
Because the behavioral side effects associated with barbiturate AEDs are of particular concern (Coulter, 1988a), the purpose of this article is to review barbiturate AED behavioral side effects, exemplify potential consequences of non-detection through clinical cases, and provide a set of clinical profiles prompting further inquiry.
This is, problem behavior thought to represent barbiturate behavioral side effects may have instead represented an undiagnosed mood disorder.

Barbiturates, particularly sodium pentothal, also have interesting applications in the field of psychology, since they can provide access to levels of consciousness not normally attainable except in dreams or trances.
This allowed them to be used for therapy of traumatised GIs in WW2 who could relive and verbalise battle experiences which were buried beyond voluntary recollection.
Barbiturates present problems because patients develop tolerance for them and even higher doses are then required to produce the same effect.
