Rugby football is referred to as "rugby", or less often "rugger", while Australian Rules Football (which is much less common) is known as "Aussie rules football".
Both forms of rugby and American football were noted at the time for serious injuries, as well as the deaths of a significant number of players.
Rugby League rules diverged significantly from Rugby Union in 1906, with the reduction of the team from 15 to 13 players, and the introduction of the play the ball (heeling the ball back after a tackle).

 National Rugby League Season 2004
Rugby Union had its origins at Sydney University in the 1860s; British Association Football -"soccer" - and the "hybrid" game of Australian Rules were first played in the 1880s; however rugby was clearly the most popular winter sport in NSW.
Rugby League, once known as "Northern Union Football", was introduced to Sydney by a New Zealander named Albert Baskerville who wanted to bring his professional rugby team the "All Golds" to play a Test series against the Australians.
The game of Rugby League was first played in Sydney in 1907, when player dissatisfaction with Rugby Union over rejection of compensation payments for injuries and lost wages led to a breakaway movement.

Nathan Ablett - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nathan Ablett (born 13 December 1985), is the son of former Australian Rules Football great Gary Ablett and is currently playing for the Geelong Football Club, having been selected by the Cats with the 48th pick in the 2004 National Draft under the father-son rule.
Aside from being the son of footballing legend Gary Ablett, Nathan made a name for himself within media circles early on, with his shyness and dislike for the public eye becoming well-documented by the media.
With his brother by his side, Nathan stepped onto the familar turf of Skilled Stadium late in the second term, booting his first goal for the club off his first kick to the roar of the Geelong faithful - all this after finding himself on the receiving end of a Gary Ablett Jnr pass.
