Topic: Attention

Attention - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Attention is one of the most intensely studied topics within psychology and cognitive neuroscience.
Attention remains a major area of investigation within psychology and neuroscience.
Of the many cognitive processes associated with the human mind (decision-making, memory, emotion, etc), attention is considered the most concrete because it is tied so closely to perception.

The Attention Economy: The Natural Economy of the Net
There is a net flow of attention towards me. If this is a reasonably polite group, there may be no great competition for your attention at the moment, but nonetheless, if there were, you would have to choose, or someone else, say the chair, would.
Now, the fact that attention can be passed on from someone who has it to someone else, and on and on, is of course a vital feature if there is to be anything resembling an economy.
At a slightly later stage infants and toddlers need attention if they are to develop any sense of themselves as persons, and neither of those needs ever completely goes away.

Classics in the History of Psychology -- James (1890) Chapter 11
If attention be the reproduction of the sensation from within, the habit of reading not merely with the eye, and of listening not merely with the ear, but of articulating to one's self the words seen or heard, ought to deepen one's attention to the latter.
In this respect, then, our attention is quite independent of the position and accommodation of the eyes, and of any known alteration in these organs; and free to direct itself by a conscious and voluntary effort upon any selected portion of a dark and undifferentiated field of view.
The sense-organ and the bodily muscles which favor their exercise are adjusted most energetically in sensorial attention, whether immediate and reflex, or derived.

ADD and ADD: Inattention, Impulsive Behavior, Hyperactivity
ADDA ~ Attention Deficit Disorder Association ~ Provides information and resources on treatment, research, and issues of relationships, parenting, and post-secondary education.
Children with FAE often don't look disabled, and they tend to score in the low-normal or even normal range of intelligence, but their mal-developed brains cause them to exhibit a wide range of behavior problems, including hyperactivity, attention problems, learning disorders, and ethical problems such as stealing, lying, and cheating.
While acknowledging that genetics may indeed play a part in predisposing a person toward ADD, Dr. Maté moves beyond that to focus on the things we can control: changes in environment, family dynamics, and parenting choices.

The Coincidence of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Creativity
This may be understood in light of the hypothesis that ADHD children seek stimulation as a result of underarousal in the reticular activating system and cortex (Klove, 1989).
Research Basis: Because it is difficult to differentiate between inattention and diverted attention (Rutter, 1989), it may be informative to discover whether the daydreaming child is not attending or is attending to alternative stimuli, plans, or ideas that are focused.
She has claimed that intelligent individuals who are bombarded by ideas seek to make sense of them by organizing them into new perceptual relationships.

I think part of the problem is that those of us who write about attention tend to be talking to people who already understand the concept, so I'll write this on the assumption that you have no idea what I'm talking about.
