The extra work caused by atrial flutter may lead to chest pain and even heart attack in people with coronary artery disease.
Atrial flutter most often comes after a heart attack or open heart surgery.
Atrial flutter can also be prevented by a surgical procedure that gets rid of the short circuit.

Atrial flutter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is important because, since the left side of the heart supplies blood to the entire body, any thrombus material that dislodges from the left side of the heart can potentially embolize to the brain, causing a stroke.
However, in individuals with a pre-existing accessory conduction pathway, such as the bundle of Kent in Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, the accessory pathway may conduct activity from the atria to the ventricles much faster than the AV node.
Of course, the thrombus material can also embolize to any other portion of the body.

 U-M CVC - Atrial Flutter
Atrial flutter is uncommon in the young except when there is a history of heart surgery involving the atria.
In young people, atrial flutter occurs most often many years after surgery for complex heart disease, and can be very disruptive for the young person trying to participate fully in school and work activities and to achieve valued life goals.
Atrial flutter rarely occurs in infants with otherwise normal hearts but when it does it usually resolves within the first year of life.

 Atrial fibrillation and flutter
When ablation is used for atrial fibrillation, it is usually followed by implantation of a pacemaker as well as drug therapy.
Atrial fibrillation may also result from an inflammation of the heart's covering (pericarditis), chest trauma or surgery, pulmonary disease, and certain medications.
Atrial fibrillation is responsible for about 15% of strokes.

At times, when antiarrhythmic drugs are used for patients with atrial fibrillation, atrial fibrillation may be organized by the antiarrhythmic drug into atrial flutter and catheter ablation can then be successfully performed, a treatment sometimes referred to as hybrid therapy.
An important difference with atrial fibrillation, though, is that many patients with atrial flutter can have their arrhythmia treated by catheter ablation with a very good probability of success.
In other words, in atrial flutter, usually the electrical wave follows a distinct pathway involving one or both upper chambers of the heart.

 Atrial Flutter
Signs and symptoms often experienced with atrial flutter are similar to those of atrial fibrillation, such as a pounding heart rate or pulse, shortness of breath, or dizziness.
This rapid, irregular pattern gives rise to the symptoms of atrial fibrillation, such as palpitations, rapid heart beat, chest discomfort, shortness of breath and dizziness.
Contributing to the symptoms is the failure of the atria and the ventricles to have coordinated pumping action as they do in the normal situation, which can also lead to a less efficient cardiac pump.
