 Atelectasis aHealthyAdvantage
Atelectasis is a potential complication following surgery, especially in individuals who have undergone chest or abdominal operations resulting in associated abdominal or chest pain during breathing.
Anyone undergoing chest or abdominal surgery using general anesthesia is at risk to develop atelectasis, since breathing is often shallow after surgery to avoid pain from the surgical incision.
If atelectasis is a result of surgery, other post-operative conditions and/or complications affect the prognosis.

THE MERCK MANUAL--SECOND HOME EDITION, Ch. 48, Atelectasis
Acute atelectasis may also occur with an injury, usually to the chest (such as that caused by a car accident, a fall, or a stabbing).
Acute Atelectasis: Acute atelectasis is a common postoperative complication, especially after chest or abdominal surgery.
If a tumor is blocking the airway, relieving the obstruction by surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or laser therapy may prevent atelectasis from progressing and recurrent obstructive pneumonia from developing.

THE MERCK MANUAL, Sec. 6, Ch. 71, Atelectasis
Patients with established atelectasis should lie with the affected side uppermost to promote drainage (postural drainage), have appropriate physical therapy, and be encouraged to cough.
Atelectasis: A shrunken, airless state affecting all or part of a lung.
A combined approach is most effective: encouragement of coughing and deep breathing, use of nebulized bronchodilators and aerosols of water or saline to liquefy and facilitate removal of secretions, and tracheal suctioning as necessary.

 Atelectasis- Health Encyclopedia and Reference
Atelectasis - a collapsed or airless state of the lung - may be acute or chronic, and may involve all or part of the lung.
Chronic atelectasis usually requires surgical removal of the affected segment or lobe of the lung.

Prevention of further atelectasis involves (1) placing the patient in such a position that the uninvolved side is dependent to promote increased drainage of the affected area, (2) giving vigorous chest physiotherapy, and (3) encouraging the patient to cough and to breathe deeply.
Pulmonary atelectasis is one of the most commonly encountered abnormalities in chest radiology findings.
Early ambulation of patients after surgery has also been found to be as effective as physical therapy.

Massive collapse in acute atelectasis causes marked dyspnoea, cyanosis, tachycardia, chest pain and fever.
If a tumour is blocking the airway, alleviating the obstruction by surgery or other means may prevent atelectasis from progressing and recurrent obstructive pneumonia from developing.
After surgery -- especially chest or abdominal surgery -- breathing is often shallow, and the lower parts of the lung does not expand properly.

eMedicine - Atelectasis, Pulmonary : Article by Michael R Bye, MD
Children with neuromuscular disease, children after surgery, and those with chest pain benefit from chest physical therapy to reduce the likelihood of developing more atelectasis; whether these procedures treat the existing atelectasis is not clear.
Continued therapy is necessary to attempt to eliminate the atelectasis and to prevent further episodes.
This may occur in children with neuromuscular disease, those who have had recent thoracic or upper abdominal surgery, those on medications that decrease their minute ventilation (such as narcotics), and those with abnormally small chest walls, which may be less compliant than the normal chest wall.

 Atelectasis -- eCureMe.com
Atelectasis is the medical term for collapse of areas of the alveoli in the lungs.
Atelectasis may occur because part of the airway above the atelectasis becomes obstructed (for example, from a lung tumor), or from simple disuse (often after surgery, patients tend not to breathe as deeply, and part of the airways collapses).
In simple terms, areas of lung normally involved with the exchange of air collapse and no longer function (this is not the same as a

 Rounded atelectasis
On chest radiography, folded lung appears as a rounded peripheral pulmonary mass and may be mistaken for a lung tumour.
Rounded atelectasis is associated with diffuse pleural thickening and may result in restriction of lung function (Hillerdal et al., 1990).
Thickening of the visceral pleura is seen, and there may be several fibrous bands close to the area of atelectasis, radiating into the lung.

 Pulmnary: Atelectasis
Lobar collapse occurs when the lobar bronchi are no longer able to conduct air to that lobe of the lung.
"Atelectasis is the absence of air from a part or the whole of the lungs, due to failure of expansion or resorption of air from the alveoli".
We will limit today's discussion to lobar atelectasis or collapse.

 Atelectasis
Atelectasis may be a total or partial collapse of the air sacs (alveoli) in the lung causing a lack of air to the affected area of the lung.
Since an airway blocked by mucus (mucous plug) may have caused the lung to collapse beyond the blockage, drainage procedures such as respiratory treatments, postural drainage, percussion, and assisted coughing should be started, and

Atelectasis is the loss of lung volume and therefore a direct sign is the displacement of interlobular fissures.
Generally this is accompanied by increased density and possibly elevation of the hemidiaphragm, mediastinal displacement, or compensatory over-inflation.

These will be best appreciated by studying the various cases in the Simon collection of appearances in atelectasis of various segments.
Each segment of the lung, when consolidated or collapsed has its particular pattern of blurring normal boundaries.

To the Editor: In rounded atelectasis (RA), the characteristic findings on a computed tomography (CT) scan include a rounded or oval lung mass 2 to 10 cm in diameter adjacent to an area of pleural thickening with an associated loss of volume and curvilinear bronchovascular bundles that converge towards the lesion (comet tail sign).
