Asphyxia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Asphyxia is a condition of severely deficient supply of oxygen to the body.
Recently, asphyxia by carbon monoxide has become a popular suicide method, especially in Japan where suicide pacts involving several individuals are more common.
In the absence of remedial action it will very rapidly lead to unconsciousness and death.

Best Practices: Detecting and Treating Newborn Asphyxia
The incidence of newborn asphyxia is highest in developing countries because women in low-resource settings are more likely to experience predisposing circumstances such as poor health before and during their pregnancy, complications during pregnancy, labor or childbirth, and lack of access to skilled healthcare.
Many babies in the developing world who suffer from birth asphyxia do not receive resuscitative care, however, in part because their families do not have access to skilled providers who know how to use simple resuscitation methods and equipment.
To help promote overall health and the early detection of conditions that may lead to birth asphyxia, the MNH Program advocates that all women receive focused antenatal care from a skilled provider.

Newborn asphyxia may also result when the umbilical cord is compressed between the baby’s body and the uterine wall, or when the umbilical cord becomes knotted.
When newborn asphyxia occurs, the chances that an infant will survive without brain damage are greatest if the infant can be resuscitated early — within the first 2 minutes after delivery.
The project will be undertaken by the Global Network for Women’s and Children’s Health Research, which is sponsored by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development of the National Institutes of Health, in partnership with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Today an infant's risk of asphyxia is lower than in the past due to improved prenatal care and awareness of the harmful effects of smoking during pregnancy.
If asphyxia occurs outside the hospital, a finger should be used to clear any mucus from the baby's throat and gentle mouth-to-mouth resuscitation should be performed.
However if asphyxia does occur, prompt treatment can assure that the condition will cause no lasting damage.

Restraint Asphyxia Near-Death Case Study, Part One
Published studies of police-involved deaths attributed to restraint-induced positional asphyxia do not consistently document the time lapse between placement in restraints and onset of noticed unconsciousness or death.
I knew that such a situation is often the precursor to restraint asphyxia.
Thus, a time frame of less than 4 minutes between initiation of forceful-prone restraint and respiratory arrest is entirely consistent with previous studies of restraint asphyxia death.

The medical records should contain objective information on maternal and neonatal history and on clinical findings on the infant.
HIE is an acquired syndrome characterized by clinical and laboratory evidence of acute brain injury due to asphyxia (ie, hypoxia, acidosis).
The AAP and ACOG also advise not using the terms perinatal asphyxia or birth asphyxia because it is difficult to identify the time of brain injury and nearly impossible to ascertain that the brain had been "normal" before such injury.

 Asphyxia
The term 'asphyxia' is thought by some forensic pathologists to be a vague and confusing term.
Postural asphyxia is a related condition, recently coming to the fore due to interest in deaths in police custardy etc, and may involve splinting of the diaphragm during restraint, coupled with the additional requirements for oxygen during a struggle.
Asphyxia can literally be translated from the Greek as meaning 'absence of pulse', but is usually the term given to deaths due to 'anoxia' or 'hypoxia'.
