Topic: Arterial blood gas

 Blood gas analysis
Blood gas studies are usually done to assess respiratory disease and other conditions that may affect the lungs, and to manage patients receiving oxygen therapy (respiratory therapy).
After the blood has been taken, the technician or the patient applies pressure to the puncture site for 10-15 minutes to stop the bleeding, and then places a dressing over the puncture. The patient should rest quietly while applying the pressure to the puncture site.
The oxygen content measurement in an ABG analysis indicates how much oxygen is combined with the hemoglobin.

 Module 2: IV Access
The sampling of arterial blood for analysis of the respiratory and acid-base status of patients is a common practice in acute care medicine.
Patients on anticoagulants and those with coagulopathies are at risk for severe bruising and hematoma formation so blood gases should only be done when absolutely necessary and the operator should take extra care to apply pressure to the area to reduce bruising.
Slowly advance the needle until you get a "flash" of blood in the hub of the needle, then "freeze" the needle and syringe in that position.

It is therefore essential that the surgical trainee not only appreciates the correct techniques involved in performing an arterial blood gas (ABG) analysis, but also has an understanding of the changes in the blood gas parameters in the commonly encountered clinical conditions.
Arterial blood gases can provide invaluable clinical information in critically ill surgical patients.
Direct arterial puncture is usually done with a 21G or smaller needle.

 Arterial Blood Gases
The amount of pain you feel depends on the skill of the health professional drawing the blood, the condition of your arteries, and your sensitivity to pain.
When the needle is positioned properly in the artery, blood will flow into the syringe.
If you are given a local anesthetic, you may feel nothing at all from the needle puncture, or you may feel a brief sting or pinch as the needle goes through the skin.

 Arterial Blood Gas Analysis
Blood is drawn anaerobically from a peripheral artery (radial, brachial, femoral, or dorsalis pedis) via a single percutaneous needle puncture, or from an indwelling arterial cannula or catheter for multiple samples.
Arterial blood sampling should be performed under the direction of a physician specifically trained in laboratory medicine, pulmonary medicine, anesthesia, or critical care.
7.1.4 Arterial blood specimens withdrawn from the body only reflect the physiologic condition at the moment of sampling (eg, pain from the puncture itself may lead to hyperventilation with consequent changes in values).

The ABG syringe was transported on ice to the hospital core laboratory and analyzed using a calibrated Chiron 855 ABG analyzer (Chiron Diagnostics, Medfield, MA, USA).
Since we determined the ABG Hb concentration within a hospital core laboratory, our findings do not necessarily apply to the situation of true point of care testing; nonetheless, many ICUs have been equipped with their own ABG analyzers for several years [12].
In the mean time, use of point of care tests in the ICU, such as the ABG Hb determination, should be not be viewed as a replacement for conventional laboratory services, but as a supplement [2].

The test for sleep apnea consists of monitoring brain wave activity (with an electroencephalogram, also called an EEG), the oxygen concentration in the blood (with pulse oximetry, which utilizes an electrode clipped on a finger or an earlobe), the movement of air during breathing (using a device placed in one nostril), and chest wall motion.
