Non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs and blood pressure
Antagonism of antihypertensive drug therapy by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
NSAIDs and antihypertensive drugs are both commonly prescribed in clinical practice.
In a study of more than 2,000 referred patients receiving NSAIDs and antihypertensive therapy, the frequency of drug interaction causing resistant hypertension was found to be about 1% annually.

The use of any type of antihypertensive and the number of drugs used was not linked to an increase in postural changes in blood pressure or orthostatic hypotension, the researchers reported.
"Our study shows that being on antihypertensive medication is not necessarily associated with orthostatic hypotension or significant postural changes in blood pressure, expect for the use of beta-blockers," he said.
After multivariate analysis, the odds ratio of orthostatic hypotension in patients taking beta-blockers versus any other type of antihypertensive was 3.3 [95% CI 1.29-8.54].

News - Patient Perceptions Vital In Continuing Antihypertensives
The way the risks and benefits of antihypertensives are presented to patients by doctors can affect how the patients take the medications.
As for their antihypertensive therapy, the patients said they would like to discontinue their use, would like an alternative to drugs, and they questioned the continued necessity of continuing to take antihypertensives because of possible long-term or hidden risks.
Using two urban family practices, the researchers studied 38 patients who were receiving repeat prescriptions for antihypertensive medications.

Drug interactions that matter (5) antihypertensives
Therefore, given the large number of prescriptions issued for antihypertensive drugs, it is important that pharmacists understand and know how to manage interactions with other drugs.
Many drugs can affect the actions of antihypertensives and vice versa and, given the large number of prescriptions written each year for these drugs, it is important for pharmacists to be aware of the more common and significant interactions that may be met in clinical practice
Other than this, moxonidine is not reported to have any clinically significant drug interactions and the mechanisms of those reported with clonidine and methyldopa follow no pattern.

 Antihypertensives - Menarini Group
Menarini's presence in the cardiovascular area goes back to the 1980's when a new association of two antihypertensive drugs was marketed (ACE-inhibitor and diuretic) that improved the therapeutic approach to the hypertensive patient.
In fact, in the past 10 years as many as 9 antihypertensives drugs have been put at the physician's disposal.
The antihypertensive treatment has also lead to a decrease in the serious disease called heart failure in which the heart is no longer able to maintain an adequate blood flow for the metabolic necessities of the peripheral tissues.

 * Antihypertensives - (Disease): Definition
As in the case of any surgical procedure, outcomes are dependent on the state of one's general health, including mental and emotional health.  The use of alcohol, tobacco, or drugs, including mind-altering drugs, muscle relaxants, antihypertensives, tranquilizers, sleep inducers, insulin, sedatives, beta -adrenergic blockers, and corticosteroids, increases surgical risk.
Antihypertensives (drugs that lower blood pressure) may be prescribed, and these may be given through a vein ( intravenous).
Antihypertensives may be prescribed to reduce blood pressure.

Antihypertensives Safe for ICH Patients; Efficacy Still Uncertain
Moderate reductions in arterial pressure do not lower cerebral blood flow (CBF) in patients with small- to medium-sized intracranial hemorrhages (ICH), according to a new study by Michael N. Diringer, MD, and colleagues.[1] Whether it improves outcome in these patients, though, remains to be investigated.
Although the jury is still out as to whether treating sudden elevations of MAP in ICH patients can reduce re-bleeding or other damage, the study shows that moderate treatment with antihypertensives is safe.

Although they all cross the placenta, most antihypertensive drugs have not been associated with significant fetal risks, with some important exceptions.
Methyldopa (Aldomet) is considered the front-line drug for chronic hypertension in pregnancy, based on evidence showing that it is safe for the fetus; this includes data on about 500 women in clinical trials.
Chronic hypertension during pregnancy--hypertension that is present before conception or develops during the first 20 weeks of gestation--is a common problem, affecting an estimated 1%-5% of women giving birth in the United States.

This article reviews the antihypertensive agents in general usage and major points are made concerning potential deleterious effects of methyldopa and nonselective beta-adrenergic blocking drugs on renal function.
In particular, recent data are shown concerning the effects of labetalol on renal function indicating the absence of decrements in glomerular filtration rate and renal plasma flow in patients with normal renal function and in patients with mild to moderate renal insufficiency.
These are: alterations in systemic hemodynamics, changes in the renin-angiotensin aldosterone system, direct intrarenal effects, and alterations in salt and water metabolism.

PJ Online News: More patients should take multiple antihypertensives
Professor Gordon McInnes, professor of clinical pharmacology at the University of Glasgow, said that pharmacists have a pivotal role in the management of hypertension, and can identify patients taking just one antihypertensive drug, and refer them back to their GP if their blood pressure is not adequately controlled.
Hypertension is one of 10 disease areas in the clinical quality section of the new GP contract, financially rewarding GP practices that help their patients achieve blood pressure targets.
Speaking at the recent launch of Olmetec (olmesartan) Professor MacGregor said, “We want every adult in the UK to know what their blood pressure is and to take appropriate action”.
