 Annelida on Encyclopedia.com
Because of the soft nature of the annelid body, fossils are not common.
The nervous system typically consists of a primitive brain, or ganglionic mass, located in the head region, connected by a ring of nerves to a ventral nerve cord that runs the length of the body; the cord gives rise to lateral nerves and ganglia in each segment.
Although a few aquatic forms have gills for respiration, most oligochaetes lack such specialized structures and use the capillaries of their body walls for respiratory exchange.

 Annelid Introduction 1
The nervous system of annelids consists of a double ventral nerve cord, a pair of ganglia in each metamere along with lateral nerves and a bilobed "brain" consisting of a pair of dorsal, cerebral ganglia.
Gas exchange in annelids occurs through the skin, gills or lateral appendages called parapodia.
Excretion occurs via paired nephridia that are found in most body segments.

 Annelid Introduction 2
In annelids, the separation of the coelom by transverse septa means that the forces of muscular contraction are not transferred through the organism.
With a repetition of body parts, the possibility also arises for specialization of these body parts into different structures (serial homology); this potential is not realized so much in annelids but will become important in arthropods!
In locomotion, metamerism provides a more effective system for body movement; the body is divided into a consecutive series of motor units that can be controlled separately or in a wave of contraction.

Furthermore, because annelids are one of the most evolutionarily successful “phyla” and because they diversified in the late PreCambrian to early Cambrian, understanding their early evolutionary history is paramount to understanding the evolution of animal life.
Recent evidence suggests that several non-segmented or partially segmented worm taxa, that were previously regarded as separate phyla, are within the annelid radiation.
This symposium includes speakers that will address annelid phylogeny and evolutionary mechanisms of segmentation in order to review the recent advances in the field and explore areas that need to be addressed.

 More on Annelid Morphology
Annelids are coelomate animals; they have a fluid-filled body cavity in which the gut and other organs are suspended.
Oligochaetes and polychaetes typically have spacious coeloms; in leeches, the coelom is reduced to a system of narrow canals, and archiannelids may lose the coelom entirely.
The coelom is divided into separate compartments by partitions called septa, which give the "segmented worms" their segmented appearance.
