 Anencephaly
Anencephaly is a condition present at birth that affects the formation of the brain and the skull bones that surround the head.
This opening may be left exposed (80 percent of the time), or covered with bone or skin (20 percent of the time).
Ultrasounds are used to view internal organs as they function, and to assess blood flow through various vessels.

 Fr. Benedict Ashley - Anencephaly
Anencephaly is a distressing condition of infants whose brains have failed to develop during gestation beyond a very rudimentary stage.
The conclusion that infants with anencephaly are not brain-dead, however, should not be argued by claiming, as is done by some, that the brain-death definition of death now standard in medical practice is erroneous.
Yet the conclusion that the child with anencephaly has a right to ordinary care only and his or her caretakers only an obligation to give the child that kind of care, does not answer the question, "What is obligatory ordinary care?".

ANENCEPHALY: Contact a Family - for families with disabled children: information on rare syndromes and disorders
Anencephaly is a condition affecting the development of the brain and often the spinal cord with a multitude of associated congenital problems.
The risk of a further pregnancy with anencephaly and spina bifida is said to be 1 in 50 if there has been one previously affected pregnancy and 1 in 5 if there have been two previously affected pregnancies.
This is an extract from The Contact a Family Directory which has information on hundreds of conditions affecting both children and adults.

Catholic Culture : Document Library : Moral Principles Concerning Infants with Anencephaly
According to the well-established teaching of the Catholic Church, the rights of a mother and her unborn child deserve equal protection because they are based on the dignity of the human person whatever the condition of that person.
The degree to which this defect affects the infant's cognitive-affective functioning is in dispute.
Modern medical techniques usually can determine this condition with a high degree of certainty before birth.

Families not aware of the diagnosis of anencephaly prior to birth or for whom the diagnosis is still fresh probably will need extra emotional support and possibly grief counseling.
Medical Care: Because anencephaly is a lethal condition, heroic measures to extend the life of the infant are contraindicated.
Families may wish to participate in one of several ongoing studies of anencephaly or NTDs as a part of the healing process.

 FAQ about anencephaly
If it is possible to keep the waters intact, the birth of an anencephalic child will happen in almost the same way as if the mother were giving birth to a healthy child, and will take as long.
Unfortunately, there is no known treatment for a child with an anencephaly.
The experience of mothers of anencephalic children has shown that the artificial breaking of waters significantly reduces the chances of the baby being born alive. (see report about the birth and life of babies with anencephaly)

Re: How does a human body form without a brain, ie Anencephaly?
These animal experiments further demonstrate that anencephaly results from the neural tube failing to close during embryonic development, and that the condition can be produced environmentally.
Re: How does a human body form without a brain, ie Anencephaly?
The main reason that in anencephaly ("without a brain") the rest of the body can function is that lots of the development and physiological body controls develop independently of the brain.

Anencephaly poses no risk to the life of the mother and in fact, babies who are born with this condition normally die within hours or days after birth, and the condition is not a justification for legal abortion in Peru, which is why the PSOG announcement was a surprise.
The protocol provides orientation to doctors on "how to act when they encounter the case of a fetus that will invariably die due to a hereditary deformation such as a deficiency in the cranium," that is, in the case of babies with anencephaly.

Spina Bifida and Anencephaly Prevalence --- United States, 1991--2001
Larger declines after folic acid fortification were observed for both spina bifida and anencephaly when analysis was limited to these nine surveillance systems with enhanced ascertainment (10).
Alternatively, the findings from the observational studies might not be applicable to populationwide interventions (e.g., folic acid fortification), possibly because of biases or uncontrolled confounding that might have been present in the observational studies.
The inclusion of data from these two states does not have a significant effect on the overall prevalence for spina bifida or anencephaly, nor does it change the direction or pattern of change in the trend.

Medicine is a constantly changing science and not all therapies are clearly established.
