Anaesthesia - definition of Anaesthesia in Encyclopedia
Anesthesia (AE), also anaesthesia (BE), is the process of blocking the perception of pain and other sensations.
In China, Taoist medical practitioners developed anaesthesia by means of acupuncture.
This allows patients to undergo surgery and other procedures without the distress and pain they would otherwise experience.

Patients' Guide to Local and Regional Anaesthesia
Regional anaesthesia means blocking the nerve supply to part of the body, such as an arm, so the patient cannot feel pain in that area.
Sometimes local or regional anaesthesia is used in addition to a general anaesthetic (i.e., in patients who are asleep during surgery).
Many patients, and even some physicians, automatically assume that surgery requires general anaesthesia, and that the patient should be asleep during surgery.

 Department of Anaesthesia
The Department of Anaesthesiology, Pain and Perioperative Medicine and Pain Relief Clinic at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital is engaged in clinical anaesthesia, anaesthesia research and education of anaesthesia residents and paramedical staff.
Supplementation of regional anaesthetic techniques with general anaesthesia has greatly facilitated discharge of patients from the day care centre.
The modern, updated 20-bedded ICU boasts of up-to-date monitoring equipment and ventilators which provide a strong back-up for the surgical and medical units.

Spinal Anaesthesia and Specific CV Conditions
Although the benefits of spinal anaesthesia over general anaesthesia with respect to cardiac morbidity reduction remain unproven, there is no reason to believe that morbidity is increased provided that there is a clear understanding of the haemodynamic effects and of the requirement for appropriate and timely intervention.
In patients with controlled hypertension receiving thoracic epidural anaesthesia, clinical experience suggests that risks are similar to the non-hypertensive population (3).
The reduction in preload associated with spinal anaesthesia can worsen the condition of patients with severe mitral valve prolapse or hypertrophic subaortic stenosis (13) (Chapter 111).

 Patient Guide to General Anaesthesia
Anaesthesia can be divided up into three parts: sleep, absence of pain, and absence of movement.
This means that the patient is given a drugs which make the patient drowsy and relaxed, but not completely asleep.
Sedation can often be used with local or regional anaesthesia to help the patient relax.

 Anaesthesia
The practice of Anaesthesia includes not only providing anaesthesia for patients undergoing surgery, but also providing medical care for critically ill patients in Intensive Care Units, managing acute and chronic pain, and providing preoperative consultative services for surgical patients with significant medical problems.
The practice of Anaesthesia also provides an ideal environment for learning the techniques of vascular access and airway management.
With this in mind, the objectives of this two-week rotation are to demonstrate:

Acupuncture Anaesthesia And the Physiological Basis of Acupuncture: Acupuncture Anaesthesia - George T. Lewith M.A., ...
It is a safe and considerably less dangerous procedure than general anaesthesia, it is safer for the old and disabled, postoperative recovery is far swifter, it is a very cheap and simple form of anaesthesia, and the physiological functions of the body, such as the pulse rate and blood pressure, remain consistently stable during anaesthesia.
Most hospitals that we visited seemed to be using acupuncture anaesthesia for between 40 % and 60 % of their surgical procedures.
Furthermore, there is no muscle relaxation in acupuncture anaesthesia so it can be quite hard work to retract the abdominal muscles.

Combined spinal and epidural anaesthesia or analgesia is a regional anaesthetic technique.
It has the benefits of both spinal anaesthesia and epidural anaesthesia.
The spinal component gives a rapid onset of a predictable block.

 Epidural Anaesthesia (page 1)
Epidural anaesthesia is a central neuraxial block technique with many applications.
Improvements in equipment, drugs and technique have made it a popular and versatile anaesthetic technique, with applications in surgery, obstetrics and pain control.
In 1945 Tuohy introduced the needle which is still most commonly used for epidural anaesthesia.

Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery: Is epidural anaesthesia acceptable at total hip arthroplasty?
Our anaesthetic technique differed from that of Williams et al8 and Gedney and l.m in that we used the epidural only during surgery, and from that of Reiz et al10 and Walts et al9 in that fentanyl rather than morphine was used and the opiate was given before rather than at the end of surgery.
Four patients with pre-operative indwelling urinary catheters were excluded from the study, leaving 173.
The choice of anaesthetic was made by the anaesthetist who was unaware of our study.

 Department of Anaesthesia
Anaesthetists are involved with all areas of critical care medicine as well as in the care of the surgical patient prior to the operation to optimise condition and in post operative care to assist with rehabilitation.
In particular the Department is interested in the physiology and pharmacology of pain states and how the use of different anaesthetic and analgesic drugs and techniques in different combinations may be used to manipulate the pathophysiology of injury.

Childbirth - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Many methods are available to reduce the pain of labour, including psychological preparation, emotional support, epidural analgesia, spinal anaesthesia, nitrous oxide, opioids, and natural childbirth methods such as the Lamaze technique or Bradley Method.
Due to the relatively large size of the human skull and the shape of the human pelvis forced by the erect posture, childbirth is more difficult and painful for human mothers than other mammals.
Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages.
